Getting a Ph.D. can be tough, but for those with connections to the military there are many resources that make earning this prestigious degree more accessible. Below you will find some of the best Ph.D. programs for both active duty and veteran military personnel.

Military personnel should look for Ph.D. programs that are flexible, especially if they are still on active duty. The programs on this list all include special offerings, such as the ability to finish them in only a few years or to do some of the coursework online. Programs address the fact that going back to school often means juggling multiple responsibilities and make efforts to accommodate this reality.

Regent University

This private university offers a selection of Ph.D. programs. The doctorates that can be earned online through Regent University fall under the umbrella disciplines of communication, education, leadership, psychology, and theology. Online programs can make going back to school much easier for active duty personnel. In addition, certain psychology and theology programs are also offered on campus.

Saint Leo University

Saint Leo University offers one doctoral degree. The Doctor of Business Administration program is flexible, in that it blends online and classroom work and can take anywhere from 3 to 7 years to complete. This flexibility could make it a great choice for military personnel who want to move into the business world. More broadly, this university offers military students perks such as peer to peer counseling, penalty free leaves of absence, and a waived requirement for on campus housing.

New England College

This college offers a Doctorate of Education. The three-year program offers two concentrations: Pre K-12 Leadership and Higher Education Administration. It is a research-based hybrid program, which could work out well for those in the military. At New England College, students connected to the military receive a waived application fee and take part in orientations specifically designed for them.

University of Texas at Arlington

This public university offers 30 Ph.D. programs in everything from education to aerospace engineering, with some programs offered online. Some of the most popular doctoral programs include business administration, computer science, educational leadership, engineering, mathematics, and public administration. The University of Texas at Arlington offers substantial perks to militarily connected students, such as paying in-state tuition even if their residency is elsewhere, in addition to special mentoring during the onboarding process and taking a leave of absence without penalties.

Niagara University

At Niagara University a 60-credit Ph.D. in leadership and policy is offered. This degree is applicable to jobs both within the military and the civilian workforce. Some credits must be completed on campus, but classes are held on Friday and Saturday evenings to accommodate students' schedules. This university offers special mentoring, clubs, and associations for military members.

University of Florida

The University of Florida offers a wide range of over 75 doctoral degrees. Nine of those programs are available through online delivery, including options in education and liberal arts. This school offers military personnel in-state tuition as out-of-state residents. Counseling and flexible scheduling are also provided to help support the military population.
