Overview of Military Colleges in New York
These New York-based military colleges are ideal for aspiring service members, as well as those interested in the Merchant Marines. While the United States Military Academy prepares students for a career as an officer in the Army, the other two academies focus on training students for naval-related jobs. Depending on their school of choice, students may have access to scholarships, social programs, and various support services.
United States Military Academy
The United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, only enrolls undergraduate students. More than 4,300 Army cadets attend the military college, as reported by NCES' 2016-2017 findings. In addition to fully funded tuition, this institute provides students with room and board, free medical care, and a $10,000 annual salary. Students dealing with personal or academic difficulties can use a multitude of counseling services through the Center for Personal Development. As an all-inclusive school, the academy has a Diversity Outreach Office that ensures that prospective students from all racial and ethnic backgrounds earn the same leadership, professional, and educational opportunities.
United States Merchant Marine Academy
The United States Merchant Marine Academy is a military college providing career opportunities to 927 undergraduate students, and since the Merchant Marines are a partnering industry to the U.S. Navy, trainees learn what it takes to provide overseas aid to military soldiers. Graduates of this school will receive a commission as an officer in the U.S. military and a U.S. Coast Guard license, though they're not obligated to perform active duty service. Those who choose not to pursue active duty must meet work requirements in the maritime industry and complete eight years of service in a military reserve unit instead.
Although the school offers free tuition and several other financial benefits, students are expected to pay additional fees and services not covered by the government or school. The academy's Tutoring Program provides academic, professional, and peer advising to students in need. Similar to that, the Midshipman Sponsorship program pairs underclassmen with experienced military or marine academy mentors who can provide friendship, counseling, and fun activities outside of school. A group called the Midshipman Intervention Team is also vital as it pertains to reporting troubled students who need expert advice and guidance.
SUNY Maritime College
SUNY Maritime College is a place where students can gain experience in military activities connected to the U.S. Coast Guard. Programs at this college are focused on the maritime industry, including marine engineering, operations and transportation programs, naval science and naval architecture programs, and maritime studies programs, among many others.
For those who qualify, the Excelsior Scholarship gives students the opportunity to attend school for free as long as their parents meet a certain income status. Transfer students may also be eligible for academic and financial support through the Educational Opportunity Program, which helps disadvantaged learners. Additionally, the Learning Center, Writing Center, and Academic Success Center are programs set in place to help cadets meet their educational goals. As stated by the NCES, there were more than 1,800 students enrolled for the 2016-2017 school year, including both graduate and undergraduate students.
