The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina
The Citadel is a rare type of school, being one of the few military colleges in the nation, and the only one in South Carolina. Students at The Citadel will find a number of benefits, among them the ability to study military science, to experience a school structured along military hierarchy, and the chance to get a jump on a military career with ROTC programs. The college has opened an Office of Military and Veterans Affairs, as well as a new Veterans Center, in order to welcome veterans and active duty students.
The Citadel is well-known as an educational/military-preparation institution. It is no surprise that with their history, they offer a number of military-friendly programs. Veterans and military students may receive academic credit for military training and experience, as well as on-boarding and mentoring programs oriented specifically toward military students and veterans. It also offers tuition discounts and scholarships specifically for military veterans.
The Citadel is a public four-year institution with approximately 3,602 students, of which 91% are male. The student/teacher ratio is 12:1, providing students with a good deal of personal attention.
There are over 20 undergraduate majors at this school in many different categories. Students may study business administration and biology, as well as computer science. There are also degrees in English and social studies education. This school also offers a program in intelligence and security studies, as well as engineering. The Citadel also has over 25 graduate programs.
In order to accommodate active duty military, the school offers a number of online courses for degrees. For veterans and civilians who work during the day, they offer evening and online courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
About 30% of the graduating cadets join a branch of the armed forces as commissioned officers. This demonstrates the impact of their strong ROTC program, which is active for all four military branches: Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps.
The school has 16 NCAA Division 1 sports teams. They have men's teams for football, baseball, basketball, and women's teams for volleyball, golf, and soccer. There are also rifle teams, as well as a track and field teams, for both men and women.
Enrollment requires a high school diploma, submission of ACT or SAT scores, and an application fee. Accepted students must meet medical history qualifications as well as physical fitness requirements.
