Education Requirements for Elementary School Teachers in Missouri

Before you take certification exams, you'll need to complete a bachelor's degree in your field. A Bachelor of Science in Education with a concentration in elementary education is your best option for this career. In the four-year program, you'll take courses in educational psychology, writing, and public speaking fundamentals. You might also learn about visual art activities for your students, as well as the practice of teaching in an inclusive setting. Your bachelor's degree program will also include an accredited student teaching experience, typically during the final semester of the program.

Missouri requires candidates to graduate with an overall GPA of at least 2.75, as well as a 3.0 GPA in both content area and professional education coursework. Upon completion of the program, students will submit an Initial Professional application to the college/university, which will then forward the application to the state's education department.

Required Exams for Elementary Teachers in Missouri

At the start of a teacher preparation program, students will complete the Missouri Educator Profile (MEP), which assesses students' work style preferences. While there are no right or wrong answers, the survey is a vital part of the preparation process. There is a $22 fee for completion, and it must be finished within one year of registering for a teacher preparation program.

During the bachelor's program, students are given the Missouri Pre-Service Teacher Assessment, known as the MoPTA. The assessment is designed to find both strengths and areas for improvement in teaching ability, and to determine how effectively a potential teacher can use their ability in a classroom environment. The assessment can include a video element, which requires test takers to submit recordings of their student teaching experiences if allowed by their respective school. Results for the MoPTA are available about four weeks after the submission deadline.

Elementary school teachers will also need to pass the Missouri General Educator Assessment (MoGEA), a standardized exam consisting of four sections: Reading Comprehension and Interpretation, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, and Writing. The first three sections consist entirely of multiple-choice questions, while Writing is a long-form answer. The four subtests can be taken separately, or in one sitting, which includes a break between subtests two and three. There is a $25 fee for each subtest, or a flat fee of $49 if all four are taken at once.

Another test required specifically for elementary school teachers is the Elementary Education Multi-Content exam, which consists of four areas: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. Each section has forty multiple-choice questions and lasts one hour. Pricing is as follows: $39 for one subtest, $65 for two, $90 for three, or $110 for the entire set.
