Education Requirements for Missouri Middle School Teacher Certification

Education requirements for those who are pursuing certification for middle school teaching in Missouri may vary slightly depending on the grade level they wish to teach. Typically, you will pursue a Bachelor of Science in Middle Education. During the four-year program, you will have the option of choosing a concentration area from language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. While you pursue the degree, you can explore classes that include educational psychology, middle classroom management, and writing across disciplines.

A Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education program will cover grades 5 and 6 in the United States, and it usually does not contain a concentration area like a middle education program does. Coursework in this program may cover elementary social studies, communication arts, and modern physics. Both elementary and middle school programs must include a student teaching/teacher education program with accreditation.

Missouri Middle School Teacher Certification Testing Requirements

Similar to degree programs, the Missouri Educator Gateway Assessments (MEGAs) necessary for middle school teachers depend on the level of education being taught. During your degree program, you should fill out the Missouri Educator Profile (MEP). This 192-question survey does not require a passing mark, as it is not scored like a traditional exam. It acts as a personality assessment for the state of Missouri to better understand who they are potentially hiring as a teacher. Consisting entirely of multiple-choice questions, the MEP can be completed at your own pace and submitted from any Internet-enabled computer.

As you move through your educational program, you will also take the Missouri General Education Assessment (MoGEA) which is made up of four subtests: Reading Comprehension and Interpretation, Writing, Science and Social Studies, and Mathematics. The Writing section consists of one prompt with a long-form answer, while the other three sections are multiple-choice. The four subtests can be taken concurrently with a break between the second and third test, or broken up into four separate sessions.

Also required by the state is the Missouri Pre-Service Teacher Assessment (MoPTA). This exam is designed to help you improve your abilities as you move through your student teaching experience. There are four components/tasks to complete, including one that has an optional video element if your student teaching environment allows it.

If you plan to teach fifth or sixth grade, the Missouri Content Assessment in Elementary Education Multi-Content must be taken. Four subtests - English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies are included. Like the MoGEA, you can take these separately or complete a combination of subtests at once. Each question is multiple-choice, and a passing score of 220 is required for certification as a teacher. For dedicated middle school teachers interested in a concentration subject, there are Content Assessments in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Structured like other Content Assessments, they contain multiple-choice questions.

Certification Process for Middle School Teachers in Missouri

As you approach the end of your degree program, you can begin to apply for a certification in Missouri. The Initial Professional Certificate (IPC) requires you to have a 2.75 overall GPA out of 4.00, with a minimum 3.00 in any concentration areas. You will need to provide proof of passing all your required MEGA exams and submit all your previous transcripts with your application. If you haven't undergone a criminal background check in the twelve months before you pursue your certification, you'll need to pay the $40.30 fee and submit another set of fingerprints. The time for certification approval can vary, depending on how quickly you submit all necessary documentation and the timeliness of receipt of your official transcripts from all academic institutions.
