MPA/MPH Degree Program Information

Dual degree programs in these fields are usually offered by schools of government, public health, medicine, or public affairs, and components of the programs may be available online. Often requiring approximately 60 to 65 credit hours, some programs can be completed in two years and include courses like the following.

A cornerstone of public health programs, an epidemiology class examines how diseases occur and spread by assessing risk factors and demographics. Methods of measuring and evaluating disease effects are studied along with approaches to conducting epidemiological research. Students also evaluate epidemiological research and conduct case studies.

Environmental Health

Courses in environmental health examine how humans' environments affect their well-being. The impact of environmental factors on infectious diseases, water quality, food access and safety, mental health, and conditions like obesity are examined. This type of class may focus on a particular type of environment, such as urban settings, and the health problems that occur within them.

These classes examine how statistical measures are applied to medical and public health issues. Aspects of statistics including probability, analysis of variance, life tables, and regression analysis are usually covered, as are hypothesis testing and methods of data presentation. Biostatistics classes may include training in software packages designed for statistical analysis.

Public Policy Analysis

Foundational courses on public policy analysis examine sectors affected by public policy, such as health and education. These courses investigate the effectiveness of policies in these areas and governments' roles in their creation and implementation. Students may also learn methods of conducting research to assess the effectiveness of public policies.

Budgeting in the Public Sector

Graduate programs in public administration usually include instruction in budgeting that are particularly useful when working in the public sector. These courses may help students understand the economic factors behind a problem and how economics impact governmental and management decisions regarding policy issues. They may also enhance students' practical skills in fiscal management.
