Information about Nanomedicine Graduate Degree Programs

Completion time for a graduate program in nanomedicine can vary in length from as little as a year to beyond four years, depending on whether you are seeking a master's or doctoral degree. A thesis or dissertation is commonly required for program completion. The following are samples of the courses you can expect to find during your program.

Foundations of Nanomedicine

The core coursework in the study of nanomedicine often includes an introductory class that describes the field in general and presents some of the specifics involved with nanotechnology. Both are studied in the context of understanding how they apply to biomedical issues. Topic areas include diagnostics, therapeutics and imaging.

Research and Ethics

Students entering a science field will typically need to become better associated with their ethical responsibilities. In nanomedicine, students will explore the safety of experiments conducted in laboratories, in addition to ethical issues, such as confidentiality. Other topics might include strategies for writing research grant proposals.

Drugs

In this course, students learn about different aspects of drug design and delivery. How various drugs operate and the way they are assessed will also be investigated. Other topics include drug screenings, pharmacogenetics, and the reasons why drugs may respond differently when administered.

Microscopy

One of the tools that students should become acquainted with during their program is the electron microscope, and they will learn how to use the microscope in study of biological materials. This will require students to become familiar with preparing specimens, sectioning them, staining, and actually operating the microscope. It's also expected that students will become familiar with the interpretation of the resulting imagery.

Physiology

Coursework in this area focuses on the physiology of the human body. Students also learn how to operate safely and effectively within a laboratory. Other topics may include immunology, the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neurophysiology, and the gastrointestinal system.

Admission Requirements

For admittance to nanomedicine graduate degree programs, schools will require your undergraduate transcripts with your application and often request your general GRE scores, as well. You will usually be asked to submit up to three letters of recommendation.

Your program in nanomedicine will acquaint you with the ethics, procedures, and tools necessary to operate in the field. Depending on the type of program you pursue, you may earn either a master's or doctorate degree.
