Description of NCAA Approved Online High Schools
Because not every online high school offers courses that are approved by the NCAA, it is very important for students to check out the programs they are interested in order to ensure that the courses they take are acceptable. In addition, the NCAA only approves core courses in the subjects of English, foreign language, natural science, math, social science, philosophy, physical science, and comparative religion. Below, we will look at five online high school programs that have had courses in these areas approved by the NCAA.
View High School
View High School is an online private high school based in California, though students from all over the country are able to enroll. View High School offers a number of online courses, mainly in the core curriculum subjects of social studies, English, science, math, and world languages, all of which are approved by the NCAA. These courses are delivered to students through video-lessons and engaging online content. All of instructors at View High School keep regular office hours, enabling students to get in touch with them as necessary when they have questions or need additional help understanding a concept.
International Virtual Learning Academy
International Virtual Learning Academy is another online private high school option for students who are seeking programs with NCAA-approved courses. This school actually offers a number of different curriculum options, depending on the needs of the student, but only its Apex Learning/Honors Curriculum offers courses that have been approved by the NCAA. Their course offerings include both honors and Advanced Placement courses, though students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or the instructor's permission in order to enroll in these courses. Students can take all of these courses at their own pace. In addition, student athletes work with their own mentor in order to keep track of their progress, communicate with parents, and help set goals. This school also allows students to join a number of diverse clubs and extracurricular activities that hold regular meetings online.
The Bridge School
Another option for student athletes who are seeking an online education is The Bridge School. This program offers a very large and diverse number of courses, and all of its core courses are approved by the NCAA. It also offers a variety of Advanced Placement courses for high-achieving students. Students complete their courses at their own pace and are able to reach out to teachers and instructors at any time of the day when they need assistance.
National High School
National High School is an online high school program that allows students to complete courses on an individual basis or to enroll in a full high school diploma program. Students who have previously been home-schooled or attended a traditional school are able to transfer their credits to National High School in order to finish their education. National High School offers a number of core curriculum courses that are approved by the NCAA, in addition to a number of elective courses that students may be interested in taking in addition to the ones required by the NCAA.
NFC Academy High School
Student athletes may also be interested in enrolling at NFC Academy High School. This private online high school program offers both a traditional and an honors online high school program. To qualify for the honors program, students must have a 3.0 GPA overall in addition to a 3.5 GPA in the subject of each honors course they wish to enroll in. NFC Academy High School has a large number of courses that are approved by the NCAA, including both honors courses and on-level courses in all of the core subject areas.
Regulations for NCAA Approved Online High Schools
There are a number of regulations set by the NCAA regarding what types of online high school courses are subject to approval. Because the NCAA only approves core courses in English, foreign language, natural science, math, social science, philosophy, physical science, and comparative religion, students who take online courses in areas like physical education, personal finance, or film appreciation would not be able to have these credits recognized by the NCAA. In addition, remedial courses, courses in which credit is received through an examination, and courses that are below grade level, such as foundational courses, are not approved by the NCAA. Students are required to take 16 core courses while in high school in order to play Division I or Division II level sports at the collegiate level.
In summary, there are a number of online high school programs that offer courses that are approved by the NCAA. Student athletes will likely want to do their research before enrolling in any courses to make sure that those specific courses are approved.
