Schools in New York with Graduate Degree Programs in Nutrition
New York University
New York University in New York City has two MS in Clinical Nutrition programs and an MS in Nutrition and Dietetics with a concentration in food and nutrition. One MS in Clinical Nutrition program is 40 credits and is designed for students with an undergraduate degree that may not be in nutrition, while the other MS in Clinical Nutrition program is 34 credits and is designed for Registered Dietitians (RDs). Both of these MS programs require a culminating experience, but the 40-credit program also requires a dietetic internship. The MS in Nutrition and Dietetics is designed for health professionals, totals 34 credits and includes a culminating research experience.
CUNY Brooklyn College
CUNY Brooklyn College in Brooklyn has an MS in Nutrition that includes topics in clinical nutrition and nutritional science. Students must complete at least 30 credits and may choose between a thesis option or a non-thesis option that requires a comprehensive exam prior to graduation. Students may also choose to complete a Dietetic Internship to pursue registration as a dietitian nutritionist (RDN). The program requires students to maintain a 3.0 GPA and take core courses in subjects like micronutrients, nutritional biochemistry, community nutrition and pathophysiology.
CUNY Hunter College
New York City's Hunter College provides an MS in Nutrition with a didactic track to prepare students wishing to become RDs. The college also offers a unique Integrated Program in Nutrition and Dietetics that includes supervised practice programs. The MS program can be completed in 2 years when taken full-time. The program requires a comprehensive exam and students must maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA throughout the program.
Columbia University, also in New York City, offers 3 MS programs in Nutrition and Education, Nutrition and Exercise Physiology or Nutrition and Public Health, as well as a Master of Education (EdM) in Community Nutrition Education. The university also has a PhD program that allows students to specialize in nutrition and physical activity, behavioral nutrition or nutritional epidemiology. The MS programs range from a minimum of 42 to 55 credits, depending on the program, while the EdM program totals 60 credits and the PhD program totals 75 credits. Students in the master's programs can also apply for the Dietetic Internship Program to pursue certification as an RD.
New York Institute of Technology
New York Institute of Technology, with campuses in New York City and Long Island, has an MS in Clinical Nutrition that is available completely online. The program is open to RDNs, students with a bachelor's degree in nutrition and current or aspiring health professionals. Graduates of the program can pursue a credential as an RDN or as a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS). Those pursuing the CNS credential need an additional 1,000 hours of nutrition experience, but can take the certification exam right after graduation.
Common Entrance Requirements
Graduate level nutrition programs in the state of New York usually require GRE scores and a minimum GPA for admission. Depending on the program, some programs may require students to be RDs and/or undergo an interview process. Prerequisite courses in areas such as chemistry, nutrition, biology, statistics and anatomy, may be required for some programs as well. Standard application materials for these programs include official transcripts, letters of recommendation, a resume and a personal statement and/or writing sample (typically a writing sample for the doctoral level).
