Program Information

There are many schools that offer master's programs in nutritional or health psychology, including Walden University, the University of New Mexico, and Grand Canyon University. The coursework toward gaining this degree is often focused on a blend of both health theory and practices as well as the methods of conducting graduate. Here are a few of the most common courses you can anticipate finding.

Health Psychology

Core health psychology coursework teaches students about how to create positive changes in individuals. These changes can be accomplished by understanding the dynamic relationship between patients, health providers, and behaviors that impact health outcomes. Students learn various theories about issues that impact health such as health habits and disease. Both Walden University and the University of New Mexico include a health psychology course.

Stress

Coursework that discusses stress helps students to better understand the relationship between emotions, stress, and the impact on health. Students also get a chance to study in how individuals deal with the stress and how the mental influence of stress has a physical impact on the body. Finally, students also get to explore a range of topics related to stress, such as traumatic stress and psychophysiology. Walden University has a course on stress and how people cope with it, while the University of New Mexico has a course on stress and how it relates to emotions and health.

Research Design

A part of graduate work is learning how to effectively conduct research. Research design courses are meant to help students better understand research methodology and construct quantitative, qualitative, and mixed design studies. This course is also useful for gaining a better understanding of the theories that underlie the construction of research studies. Most graduate schools feature a research course, such as Walden University and Grand Canyon University.

Health Behaviors

Health behaviors refer to the actions that individuals take regarding their health. Courses in this area guide students to a better understanding of models of producing behavioral change. The positive benefits of such change can include a reduction in disease or better management of disease, as well as the prevention of relapse into bad health behaviors. Grand Canyon University offers one such course that focuses on evaluating techniques to improve these behaviors and Walden University offers a course on behaviors and their biological bases.

Community

Courses that focus on community examine promoting health and preventing disease at a community. Students learn about preventing disease during this coursework. They also look at how to apply those interventions and promotions of good health habits across the entire community. Courses like this are offered at the University of New Mexico and Grand Canyon University.

Admission Requirements

Students applying to a graduate program in health psychology will typically need to submit some form of graduate test score. Most commonly, students will need to submit their GRE scores, though schools may or may not list a minimum score for applicants. Grand Canyon University does require a minimum GRE core of 1000. Students will always need to submit their undergraduate transcripts, and they will typically be required to demonstrate that they maintained a minimum GPA while completing their graduate work. This minimum can range widely, as Walden University maintains a 2.5 minimum GPA for admission while Grand Canyon University requires at least a 2.8.

Coursework in Master's in Nutritional Psychology/ Health Psychology will focus on learning how to create a research study, learn about stress, and understand health habits. Upon completion of your program, you will also be prepared to conduct independent research and construct studies of your own into the area of health psychology.
