Information for Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Certification

Medical assistants work in the healthcare field, either in physician's offices, hospitals, or healthcare clinics, where they are tasked with a range of different medical and administrative duties. Generally, medical assistants will help with physical exams, record a patient's history, take vital signs, and even administer medications or injections. Further, they also assist with office duties, such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, and filling out insurance forms. Medical assistants also must be familiar with electronic health records (EHRs).

To pursue a career as a medical assistant, you need to complete a postsecondary education program, which are usually offered at the community college or technical school level. Generally, medical assisting programs lead to an associate degree, diploma, or certificate. Some medical assistants then choose to become a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), which is a credential that is offered the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). CMA or another medical assistant certification is often preferred or required by employers.
