Online EMT Certification Programs in Florida

Overview of Online EMT Certification Programs in Florida

In order to become an emergency medical technician in the state of Florida, individuals must complete an approved EMT training program. These programs equip candidates with the skills and knowledge needed to provide medical care in emergency situations and can be found at several schools across the state. Because EMT certification programs have a mandatory in-person skills session, there are no fully online certification programs, but many schools offer hybrid programs that contain a blend of online and in-person learning.

Admissions requirements for EMT certification programs are minimal and applicants usually need to have only a high school diploma and valid CPR certification. In addition to the successful completion of a training program, the Florida Department of Health also requires that candidates have either CPR for Professional Rescuer or BLS for the Healthcare Provider certification. The final step of the certification process involves taking and passing the certification exams administered by the National Registry for Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).

Description of Florida EMT Training Programs

Hybrid programs deliver the same content as completely on-site programs but with the added ease and flexibility of online delivery. Students complete lessons and virtual simulations at home and then come to campus to complete the hands-on skills component of the program.

First Response Training Group

FRTG offers a hybrid EMT course that allows students to feel engaged and connect with instructors through chat rooms that focus on scenario training and documentation, among other topics. Online instruction is complemented by 100 hours of clinical rotation, where students gain practical experience and have the opportunity to practice their skills.

McFatter Technical College

MTC offers a hybrid EMT certification program that features convenient evening sessions for candidates who are trying to balance education and a full-time work schedule. The curriculum contains 300 hours of overall instruction that is divided between courses that cover basic and advanced topics in emergency medical services such as pharmacology and anatomy, along with clinical rotations that provide students with practical experience.

Orlando Medical Institute

OMI makes use of a 'flipped' classroom model wherein students complete lessons about core concepts at home and then attend on-campus training sessions. OMI provides the options to attend classes days, nights or weekends, meaning that candidates with full-time employment will not need to compromise their work schedule.

Job Prospects After EMT Certification Programs

After completing EMT training, candidates should feel prepared to sit for the NREMT exams, which focus on cognitive and motor skills. Once they have obtained this certification, graduates can begin looking for work immediately or pursue additional education (such as an associate's degree) to pursue careers as paramedics and other medical professions. Aspiring paramedics in Florida must complete a paramedic training program and pass NREMT certification in order to find work in this role.

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment prospects in the EMT and paramedic field are solid and should remain so in the future. The BLS reports that job opportunities in this field will increase by 7% from 2018 to 2028, a spike that will generate 18,700 new job openings. The BLS cites an aging population as the primary cause of this sustained demand and notes that emergency medical services will always be in demand in response to automobile accidents, natural disasters, and other emergencies. As of 2019, the median annual wage for EMTs and paramedics was $35,400.

EMT training programs are the first step towards earning certification and becoming an emergency medical technician, and several programs in Florida allow candidates to complete a portion of their classwork online. These programs teach students about essential medical care techniques while providing preparation for the NREMT certification exams that are required as part of the licensure process.
