Online Graduate Programs in Music Business

Master of Arts in Music Business

Master of Arts (MA) in Music Business degree programs train students in the technologies, management, finances, methods and legal issues of the music industry. These programs may require around 36 credit hours and be completed in one year. Course topics may include research methods, law, policy, marketing and management for music business. Some of these programs may culminate in a thesis-like project called a final experience in music business.

Master of Business Administration in Music Business

As of 2018, there is one available online Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Music Business degree program. It includes 9 core business courses and 4 music business courses. This program is a total of 36 credit hours and can be completed in roughly 15 months. Graduates of the program may work as tour managers, music publishers, music distributors, concert promoters or artist managers. The program includes music business courses in subjects like marketing strategies and finance, as well as core business administration courses in subjects such as economics, statistics for business and human behavior in organizations.

Master of Music in Music Business and Entertainment Industries

Another rare, but available program, is an online Master of Music in Music Business and Entertainment Industries that is designed for aspiring executives and entrepreneurs in the music industry. Students in this program take a total of 30 credit hours, which can be completed in 18 months. This program may include core courses in international music licensing and publishing, copyright law and agreements in the industry, as well as elective courses in subjects like leadership, tour management, music operations and facility management. Students must complete a cumulative exit exam at the end of the program.

Common Entrance Requirements

It is fairly common for all three of these master's degree programs in music business to require applicants to fill out the designated application, hold a bachelor's degree and submit official transcripts. Some online schools may have a specific GPA requirement for all of their graduate degree programs, such as a minimum of a 2.75. Some of these master's degree programs may also require students to submit letters of recommendation, a resume and/or a personal essay to explain their background, career goals and/or personal interest in the program. Although it is not required, some programs may prefer if students have experience in the music industry. Some programs may also charge an application fee.
