Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree programs generally aim to train future teachers who might not have an undergraduate background in education or who don't have a teaching license yet. While these online MAT programs usually consist of online coursework, it's important to note that they also often require real-world internships or teaching experiences. North Carolina-Based MAT Programs

North Carolina Central University

Located in Durham, North Carolina Central University offers an online MAT program that features a unique concentration in teaching students with visual impairments. This online 48-57-hour program gives you training in braille production, teaching braille literacy, assistive technologies, and training students with different kinds of visual impairments. You are required to complete coursework, complete a practicum that is designed to give you real-world experience in teaching students with visual impairments and attend face-to-face instruction on a limited number of weekends. You must also complete an e-portfolio and pass a comprehensive examination.

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has several online MAT programs for students who have completed one of the university's approved graduate certificate programs in education, including programs in ESOL, elementary education, middle grades, and special education. Along with credits earned in the graduate certificate program and additional courses, these programs require anywhere from 33-37 credits, depending on the specific concentration you choose. Also, you are required to complete clinical field experiences in two different settings. A capstone experience that consists of an evidence-based project is also required.

University of North Carolina Wilmington

The University of North Carolina Wilmington offers a 100% online 33-credit hour MAT in Physical Education & Health program that is for those who already have earned a bachelor's degree in public health, exercise science, sports leadership, or a related field. This program includes coursework in human development, instructional development, and teaching physical education and a practicum in education and field experience in physical education and health. There is also an online MAT in Elementary Education that leads to K-6 teacher certification and is for those with little to no experience in education or teaching. This program requires online coursework, field placement in a K-5 educational setting, and a full-time internship.

North Carolina State University

At North Carolina State University, which is located in Raleigh, you can earn an online/hybrid MAT in Elementary Education, English - Secondary Education, English as a Second Language (ESL), or Language Arts - Middle Grades. These MAT programs feature a majority of online classes but also require some face-to-face classes. All of these online MAT programs require 33 credits with core coursework and specialty area classes, feature an accelerated course of study that can be completed in about a year-and-a-half, and lead to initial teacher certification. Also, all of the programs, except for the MAT in Language Arts - Middle Grades, require a teaching internship.

Lees-McRae College

In Banner Elk, Lees-McRae College has a MAT in Secondary Education that can be completed by taking online classes. This program allows you to choose a specialization in history or English. You are required to earn 27-29 credits with coursework within your specialization as well as coursework on such subjects as classroom management and instructional design. As a two-phase program, you first earn an initial North Carolina teaching license in secondary education, and then with advanced coursework, you earn and an advanced degree teaching license.

Entrance Requirements for Online MAT Programs

Generally, in order to apply to an online MAT program in North Carolina, you must already hold a bachelor's degree. Some programs also require that you have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 and others require at least a GPA of 2.75 or 2.5. Other application materials may include letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and transcripts. A limited number of programs may also require an interview, a writing sample, or GRE scores as well.

Online MAT programs in North Carolina often require online coursework but also require some real-world experiences, such as teaching practicums and/or internships. To apply to an online program of this kind, you don't need to necessarily have a background in education but must hold a bachelor's degree.
