Dual MBA/JD degree programs allow you to earn a Master of Business Administration and a Juris Doctor degree over the course of 3-4 years. Online programs of this type will either be fully online or will involve MBA coursework that is completed in an online format and JD coursework that is completed on campus. Across programs, there is a common set of required courses, which are split between the MBA and the JD degree, and there is also a common set of entrance requirements.

Common Coursework for MBA/JD Degree Programs

It's important to note that exact course requirements vary by dual MBA/JD program; however, there is usually some core coursework that is commonly required in most programs. Below, we will discuss some classes found in both the MBA and JD degrees.

Financial Accounting

During the MBA part of your dual degree program, you could take a class on financial accounting. In this type of course, you will most likely learn generally accepted accounting principles. You can also examine how to analyze financial statements and corporate disclosures in order to understand a company or institution's financial standing and cash flow.

Marketing or Marketing Management

Another type of MBA course you may take is that of marketing or marketing management. This course centers on the many theories and principles of marketing. You may cover such topics as marketing strategies and market research. You could also get a chance to study solutions to marketing problems through case studies and special exercises.

Business Analytics

Business analytics is also a core course that could be included in your MBA curriculum. You could learn how to collect data as well as how to visualize that data or create statistical analyses to identify patterns. Additional course topics discuss how to develop strategies based on the conclusions gleaned from that data. You might also learn how to use various analytical tools, including Microsoft Excel and Google Analytics.

Criminal Law

The curriculum for your JD degree will usually include a course on criminal law. A course of this kind will most likely cover a range of topics related to criminal law, including its origins and goals. You could also learn about criminal statutes, specific crimes and their punishments, accomplice liability, and criminal defenses. Instruction covers key criminal law concepts, such as actus reus and mens rea, as well.

Legal Research and Writing

You might also take a course on legal writing and research during the first year of your JD program. This kind of course focuses on legal research methods, legal reasoning, legal analysis, and writing. Some courses include assignments that require you to research a legal issue, analyze it, and draft a legal brief.

Constitutional Law

Constitutional law is another core course that could be a part of your JD program. For this course, you will study American constitutional law, including the concepts of federalism, the separation of powers, and interstate commerce. You might also study due process and equal rights protections.

Common Entrance Requirements

For most dual MBA/JD programs, you will need to apply and be admitted to both programs. For some programs, you will first apply to the JD program, and after completing a year of law school, you will then be able to apply to the MBA program. Other programs will allow you to apply concurrently. Application materials include transcripts, letters of recommendation, a resume, and a personal statement. You will also need to take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), and most programs will also require the GRE or GMAT for the MBA part. However, some programs make the GMAT optional and will allow your LSAT scores to be sent over to the business school when applying for the MBA.

Dual online MBA/JD programs have a similar set of core coursework, with the MBA usually being the online portion of the program. There is also a common set of entrance requirements, and you will usually need to apply to the MBA and JD programs separately.
