Schools in Virginia with Online MBA Programs

Virginia Commonwealth University

Richmond's Virginia Commonwealth University offers an online, 2-year MBA program. Students participate in small, online classes each week and must complete 3 different on-campus residencies that take place on weekends. Students take 2 traditional courses each semester, as well as a 1-credit course that examines specific business issues, such as globalization, cybersecurity, risk management and innovation. The traditional 3-credit courses cover topics in areas like marketing, finance, statistics, accounting, business policy and leadership.

College of William and Mary

The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg has an online MBA program that requires 49 credits taken through 12 courses. Students can complete the program in 24 months, including 1 on-campus residency. At the beginning of the program students participate in a 'Renaissance Manager' cornerstone course that helps them choose a 'Wicked Problem' that they proceed to try and solve throughout the program as they apply knowledge and skills they learn. The program concludes with a practicum experience that focuses on leadership.

Radford University

This school in the city of Radford provides an online MBA program that can be finished in 2 years. Students in the online program follow the same curriculum and admissions requirements as the on-campus program but in a part-time format. The program consists of 24 credits of core coursework and 12 credits of electives, which include optional thesis and research projects. Other electives allow students to focus their studies in areas like finance, marketing or management.

Old Dominion University

Old Dominion University in Norfolk has an online MBA program as well as a hybrid program. Students in either program can specialize their education through more than 40 available graduate certificate options. The program can be completed in as little as 21 months or as much as 42 months following various schedule plans. Students with a business background must complete at least 40 credit hours, while students with a non-business background must complete at least 45 credits that include MBA pre-core courses.

University of Virginia

Although this school does not offer a traditional MBA online, it does provide hybrid distance learning options for its Executive MBA and Global Executive MBA programs. Students in these programs can complete coursework and virtual group meetings online, which makes up roughly 1/3 of the program. The remaining requirements include weekend residencies in Charlottesville and/or a global residency. Courses are typically offered in the evenings twice a week and are also recorded. Students take core courses in topics such as business ethics, global economy, marketing, decision analysis and leadership.

Common Entrance Requirements

Students applying to online MBA programs in Virginia usually need at least a bachelor's degree and may need to have a specific number of years of work experience. Applicants also typically need to have current GMAT test scores, but some programs may accept the GRE. These programs are likely to require online students to submit transcripts, letters of recommendation, a resume and a goal statement or statement of intent with their application. Some programs may also include an interview process, which may be online as well.

Colleges throughout Virginia offer online MBA programs that may take as little as 21 months to complete. Although most of the coursework can be completed online, some of these programs may still require on-campus residencies.
