Overview of Online Medical Assisting Programs in Ohio

Aspiring medical assistants can improve their job prospects by completing a post-secondary certificate program that includes training in key skill areas. These programs feature a mandatory in-person lab component, meaning that fully online programs are not available. Many medical assistant training programs, however, utilize a blended format wherein students complete coursework online and then supplement this knowledge by attending on-site sessions in the lab or at medical facilities. Several of these hybrid programs can be found at schools in Ohio.

Prospective students will not need prior experience in order to apply to these programs. Programs require a high school diploma as part of the admissions process but do not require a bachelor's degree or demonstrated work experience. After earning a medical assistant certificate, graduates will be qualified to begin looking for work as medical assistants immediately. Though not mandatory, certification is available in the field through several different agencies.

Career Opportunities for Graduates with a Medical Assistant Certificate

Employers only require that aspiring medical assistants have a high school diploma, but a certificate is an excellent way to demonstrate one's credentials and improve the chances of finding a job. The profession also allows for on-the-job training and some professionals opt for an associate's degree in order to gain further education. As of 2019, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that medical assistants earned a median salary of $34,800 per year.

Now is a very good time to be entering the profession, as the BLS expects employment in this field to grow extensively. The BLS predicts that demand for medical assistants will grow 23% between 2018 and 2028, a rate that is much faster than the national average for all jobs and would create 154,900 new openings in the field. Ohio, in particular, is a promising location, as the BLS noted that the North Northeastern Ohio area was among the top nonmetropolitan areas with the highest employment for this field.

The state of Ohio is home to several schools that offer online training programs in medical assisting, with students completing a mix of online instruction and on-site skills training. Students who complete these programs will be prepared to begin careers as medical assistants.
