Overview of Online Ministry Certificate Programs

Students can enter into online ministry certificate programs specifically in areas like ministry leadership, Christian ministry, or biblical ministry. These programs are designed for individuals that want to learn about scriptures and biblical leadership. Before gaining admission to one of these programs, applicants will need to submit all of their previous transcripts, and some schools may require letters of reference.

Ministry Certificate programs are usually completed at the undergraduate level, and are typically available completely online. These programs require students to earn somewhere between 12 and 20 credit hours from required coursework, though this varies from school to school. The typical time that it takes to complete the program ranges from six to eight months of coursework.

Requirements for Ministry Certificate Programs

These online programs typically include courses focused on biblical knowledge and spiritual formation or leadership, and some even require the completion of some elective coursework. A few of the commonly required core course topics that can be seen in these programs include the gospels, interpreting the Bible, and Christian thought.

Course Topics

The Gospels

The gospels is a class that will allow students to study the four gospels and understand the purpose that each of them served. The class will also cover the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the events in his life, and his death. Additionally, those enrolled in this course will cover the place, time, and circumstances of the events that occur in the gospels.

Old Testament

A course on the Old Testament is designed to cover the language used in the Old Testament, its purpose, and its themes. Students will also study the people and events that occur in the Old Testament. Lastly, the class will cover the history surrounding the Old Testament and how the text itself was written.

Interpreting the Bible

Students that take a course in interpreting the Bible will be taught to interpret a variety of texts like parables, prophecies, and poetry. This class will touch base on the exegetical method of interpretation. By the end of the course, students will understand the process of interpreting the Bible and its applications.

New Testament

A course on the New Testament will cover the different parts of the New Testament including the gospels and Acts, Pauline epistles, and Revelation. Students will study the important events that transpire in the New Testament and key events in Jesus's life and Paul the Apostle's life. There may also be an emphasis on theological content and concepts.

Christian Thought

Christian thought is a class that will cover an array of topics like the creation of humankind, the church and its nature, theology of religion, and Christ and the work that he did. Those enrolled in this class will look at topics from both the Pentecostal perspective and the evangelical perspective. The course will also go over reasoning and its role when it comes to the topics of Christian life and thinking.

Paths After Earning a Ministry Certificate

After earning a Ministry Certificate there are a variety of paths that someone could follow, a few of which include pursuing a career as a minister, a missionary, religious teacher, or as another church leader. Students could also volunteer with local churches or work for non-profit businesses. The credits that students earn as a part of this program could also be transferred to another program so that students could continue their education.

Those interested in a career in the church could become directors of religious activities and education. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the mean wage as of 2018 for these individuals was $46,980. In 2018, there were also 21,700 positions in this field.

Once students enter into a Ministry Certificate program, they can take courses that may include Christian thought, the New Testament, and the Old Testament. After earning their certificate, students may be able to enter into the working world and become ministers, church leaders, or directors of religious activities and education.
