Information on Online Nurse Educator Certificate Programs

Nurse educator certificate programs are graduate-level programs that prepare students for careers teaching future nurses (or helping current nurses advance their careers). These programs can also help students meet the education requirements for the Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) exam, though a master's or doctoral degree is also needed. The courses for the certificate programs can be completed entirely online; however, many schools require students to complete an in-person practicum or teaching experience at an approved location.

To be able to enter into a nurse educator certificate program, applicants will need to hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree in nursing from an accredited school and be a licensed registered nurse. Some schools require applicants to have completed (or currently be enrolled in) a Master of Science in Nursing degree program as well. Other admission requirements may include meeting specific GPA requirements, such as an undergraduate GPA of at least a 3.0 or a 3.3 GPA in graduate studies.

Online Nurse Educator Certificate

An online nurse educator certificate program usually requires students to earn between nine and 12 credits and can be completed in as few as two semesters. Students can learn about the roles that nursing educators play, how to teach in the nursing field, and much more.

Course Topics

Nurse Educator Role

A course on the role of a nurse educator is designed to cover general responsibilities of an educator in the nursing field within both healthcare and educational settings. Some of the topics that may be addressed include how to improve the quality of learning, different types of learner needs, and foundational principles of teaching. Students may also discuss the impact that politics, society, and economics have on nurse educators.

Nurse Education Practicum

A nurse educator practicum allows students to apply the skills that they have learned throughout their other courses in classroom and clinical settings. Students may work with a mentor or preceptor to create learning activities, give lectures, lead simulations or labs, and provide feedback to nursing students. They could also learn about ethics and legal issues that may be faced by nurse educators.

Teaching and Learning in Nursing

Teaching and learning courses give students an overview of the learning process, different strategies that can be used to teach nursing skills, and how to implement these strategies. Students could also learn about curriculum development and teaching in diverse settings.

Career Outlook for a Nurse Educator Certificate

Individuals who earn an online nurse educator certificate could be ready to take the Certified Nurse Educator exam and meet the requirements to pursue positions as postsecondary teachers in nursing. These roles could be found in various settings, including colleges, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities. Other possible positions graduates could seek include clinical instructor, community health educator, patient educator, or staff development coordinator.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for postsecondary nursing teachers in 2019 was $74,600. This career is expected to see a growth of 20% from 2018 to 2028, which is considered to be much faster than the national average. As of 2018, there were 69,000 jobs for postsecondary nursing teachers. Due to the high growth previously mentioned, this field will have 13,800 more jobs created over the span of ten years.

An online nurse educator certificate program may be a good fit for students who are looking to prepare for the Certified Nurse Educator exam and to seek roles where they teach future nurses. In this program, students learn about role of nursing educators as well as how to teach in the nursing field.
