Career Information for Online Writing Jobs that Don't Require a Degree

Freelance Writer

Love to write about anything and everything, while making your own schedule and working from the location of your choosing? Freelance writers are hired by companies and clients in nearly every industry to write web pages, blog posts, and marketing material. Freelancers need to be driven and well-organized, since they often have to make project pitches to potential employers and juggle multiple assignments. In nearly every opportunity, all work can be completed and submitted online. Additionally, a college degree is not required to become a freelance writer, but past writing experience is a must.

If you enjoy working exclusively on writing engaging and relevant blog posts, becoming an online blogger may be a good choice. While you do have the option of starting and writing your own blog, many companies are looking for bloggers who can create industry-specific, SEO-friendly blog posts for their websites. Due to the nature of the work completed, bloggers are often allowed to work online from home. Although some blogger positions require a college degree in a related field, there are blogging opportunities that simply require demonstrated writing experience and skill. Familiarity with web publishing and HTML is also a plus.

Content Writer

Content writers are highly skilled in researching provided topics, writing accurate and engaging content about provided subjects, and meeting tight deadlines. These writers are also responsible for proofreading their content, as well as adjusting their writing to fit company specifications. Although there are still content writer positions that require degrees and being present in a traditional 9-5 office position, a quick online search of jobs shows that the field is changing. Many content writer positions are now remote positions, and some only require previous writing experience.

Are you always thinking of great ideas for TV commercials, radio ads, and social media ads? If so, working as an online copywriter could be a good fit for you. Copywriters work with various companies (often with ad agencies) to create on-brand ad copy and slogans for advertising campaigns. Some copywriting positions do not have work-from-home opportunities and require a degree, but remote positions can be found for those who have experience and demonstrated writing skill, even without a degree. Remote positions may require occasional in-house visits for meetings, depending on the job.

Web Content Editor

If you are skilled in both writing and editing, a web content editor position can be a suitable choice. Not only do web content editors edit written content such as blog posts, but they are also responsible for writing various pieces as well. These editors also work with content writers and freelance writers to help ensure that all web content is on-brand and grammatically correct and communicates the appropriate messaging. Web content editors must have previous experience. Education requirements and work environments can vary, and many remote positions do require an associate's or bachelor's degree; however, some positions can be found without a degree.
