Overview of Online CPR Certification Programs

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an essential medical process used to administer emergency support to an individual experiencing cardiac arrest. A number of programs offer online and in-person courses that teach the specifics of this process and award candidates with CPR certification. There are no special entry requirements for these certifications and anyone who is interested in obtaining CPR certification can do so without needing a college degree or prior work experience.

CPR certification is an important step for those looking to become an emergency medical technician or paramedic, but it can also be a valuable skill for non-medical careers as well. Construction workers, childcare providers, electricians and all manner of office workers can also benefit from CPR certification, with certain jobs (such as firefighting) requiring CPR certification. CPR certification courses consist of a series of lessons, followed by an exam that, if passed, results in candidates earning the credential. Individuals interested in pursuing further certification can opt for a number of options, including Basic First Aid, CPR/AED for Health Professionals, and Basic Life Support certifications.

Description of Online CPR Certification Courses

For those with busy schedules or living in areas far from on-site training, a number of companies and institutions offer fully online CPR certification courses. The online nature allows for self-pacing, although these programs are typically very short and students can complete individual lessons in a matter of hours. Many CPR certification programs also train students on how to use an AED (automated external defibrillator) and CPR/AED combination certifications are common offerings in Oregon.

After completing all lessons, students then take a final skills exam and will earn CPR certification if they successfully pass this assessment. CPR certification is effective immediately and graduates will be issued a certification card. CPR certification in Oregon is valid for two years and candidates can renew their certification by completing an online program, although some employers may require that candidates pass an examination conducted at an on-site location.

Job Opportunities Involving CPR Certification

Anyone interested in becoming an emergency medical technician or paramedic must have CPR certification. This career involves serving on the frontlines in emergency medical situations and administering care to the sick or wounded. EMTs and paramedics issue first aid treatment, assess the condition of patients, and even take care of other duties such as driving an ambulance and performing inventory on medical supplies. Other than CPR certification, aspiring EMTs only need a high school diploma in order to enroll in non-degree training programs, although it is important to note that paramedics may need an associate's degree. Further into their careers, emergency medical technicians can pursue certification through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).

The demand for EMTs and paramedics is fairly high and expected to stay that way in the near future. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that from 2018 to 2028, employment in this field is expected to grow 7%, a rate that is faster than the national average for all occupations and will lead to 18,700 new jobs. The BLS notes that emergencies (such as natural disasters, car crashes, etc.) will always require attention, and an aging population should lead to an increase in age-related health problems, such as strokes, heart attacks, and other issues requiring intervention from an EMT.

CPR certification programs teach individuals how to administer important life-saving techniques and can be earned via completely online training courses offered at several locations in Oregon. Candidates who earn these certifications can move on to any number of careers, with popular options such as emergency medical technicians and paramedics.
