Organizational Sociology Graduate Programs
Ph.D. in Management & Organizations & Sociology
This is a joint program between the sociology department and the management and organizations department. As such, it focuses on topics common to both areas, including social movements, entrepreneurship, and gender inequality. During the first year of this program, student will participate in research projects and develop their methodology. Many areas of research are available to students, including big data, group behavior, organizational design, social inequality, historical comparative sociology, and social networks. Students must complete 16 courses, a preliminary exam, a management and organization candidacy paper, a sociology paper, a thesis proposal, dissertation, and oral exam. During the second, third, and fourth years, students must complete teaching and/or research assistantships.
Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior
Students in this program research management and behavior within organizations. This is a joint program that draws expertise from the business school and the sociology department. The methods of sociology and the concepts of business administration are taught. Students may choose 'micro' or 'macro' focus. While the micro focus is on psychology, the macro focus would be of particular interest to organizational sociology students as it covers the behavior or organizations and other sociological groups. In addition to the focus area, two MBA elective courses are also required. Students must teach for one academic term and serve as an apprentice to a faculty member. Students must complete a qualifying paper, two research papers, and a statement indicating their research goals. A dissertation is also required.
Ph.D. in Sociology
Students interested in organizational sociology can specialize in organizational and economic sociology via a research emphasis within this Ph.D. program. The coursework consists of six core courses, two methods electives, and seven electives. In addition to the coursework, students must complete professional development requirements, which include professionalization and empirical paper seminars, a department colloquium and workshops. Research in organizational and economic sociology is done in collaboration with faculty members with expertise in those areas. Students must also complete a teaching requirement. There are several benchmarks, including the completion of the essay exam during the first year. Students must gain certification in two specialty areas, such as organizational sociology, race or social networks. Also, a preliminary exam must be completed. The final step is presenting the dissertation.

To be accepted into a doctoral program in organizational sociology, students must complete an online application, submit college transcripts, and provide GMAT or GRE scores. Also, some universities require a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, and resume. International students must submit their TOEFL scores. Some universities require a writing sample.
