Professional Certificate Vs Graduate Certificate

A professional certificate can either provide persons with the skills to enter certain specific fields such as information technology or auto mechanics or build on the basic skills they already have as in the case of a human resource professional. Graduate certificates, on the other hand, are usually only open to persons with an undergraduate degree and in some cases can be used as credit towards a master's degree. This article will provide an overview of programs from both categories.

Professional Certificate and Graduate Certificate Program Options

Google IT Support Professional Certificate

This certificate can be earned in less than six months and there are no admission requirements. The courses are 100% online which offers a level of flexibility. The courses in this program include Technical Support Fundamentals, IT Security and System Administration and IT Infrastructure Services. After completing this certificate program, persons can pursue careers in IT Support, Customer Care Representatives and Technical Support Associates.

Certificate in Professional Human Resource Management

This is a 13-week course that is offered online. While there are no set academic requirements for admission, the course is geared towards human resource professionals who are seeking Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) certification. With this certification, candidates can further their careers in human resource management. The program covers topics such as Ethical Practice, Communication, Talent Acquisition, and Workforce Management.

Risk Assessment Certificate

The risk assessment certificate consists of 40 hours of course work and can take as much as two years to complete. The program is meant to prepare persons for identifying hazards in their workplace and conducting the necessary risk analyses. There are no academic requirements for admission to this program but it's helpful if the candidate has some professional involvement in the safety and risk assessment areas of their company. With this certificate, the candidate can further their career as a safety or risk assessment professional.

Financial Management Graduate Certificate Program

This program is geared towards persons who have already earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and are working in the financial services industry. To earn this certificate, persons must complete four courses, three of which will include Financial Markets and Institution, Mergers and Acquisitions and Investment Analysis and Portfolio Management. After completing the program, persons will have a deeper understanding of areas such as portfolio diversification and long-term financing which they can use to further their careers in the financial sector. For admission into this program, the candidate will also need three letters of recommendation, a resume, and a personal statement.

Entrepreneurial Journalism Graduate Certificate

This certificate program is geared towards persons who have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and would like to start their own media-related business. The program will cover topics such as business fundamentals, marketing, and advertising. Persons with this certificate can also use their newly acquired skills to improve the processes at their current workplace.

Certificate in Music Performance Program

This is a two-year certificate program that focuses on music performance at the graduate level. Persons can study in any of the areas of strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, harp, piano, collaborative piano, organ and voice in order to upgrade their performance careers. To be admitted into the program, persons would need a bachelor's degree in music with a minimum GPA of 3.0 for the last 60 semester hours and 3.0 for all music hours. The candidate must have completed a full senior recital as part of the undergraduate program and an audition tape will need to be submitted.

General Program Admission Requirements

For professional certificates, persons generally don't need any specific academic achievements but it may be helpful to have some professional experience for programs pertaining to human resources and risk assessment. To be admitted to a graduate certificate program though, candidates must have at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. In some cases, these programs may require letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a proficiency examination. For graduate certificate programs specific to the visual or performing arts, candidates would be required to submit audition tapes or portfolios with their application.
