Houston Psychology Graduate Programs

Houston Baptist University

Houston Baptist University has three master's degree programs in psychology. The Master or Arts in Psychology is a 37-credit program that requires students to maintain a 3.0 GPA. Students can also pursue a Master of Arts in Psychology - Licensed Specialist in School Psychology (LSSP). This program is 60 credits and also requires a 3.0 GPA. The admissions requirements for these programs include the following:

  • Official transcripts for a bachelor's degree in psychology earned within the last seven years. Candidates with an unrelated bachelor's degree can apply if they completed undergraduate courses in psychology and statistics.
  • Two recommendation letters
  • Resume
  • GRE scores

Students can also pursue a Master of Arts in Psychology - LSSP Respecialization. Students can transfer credits from previous graduate coursework. All students must earn at least 30 credits and complete a 1,200-hour Licensed Specialist in School Psychology internship. Admission requirements include an online application, a graduate degree in educational diagnostics or counseling, and two recommendation letters.

Rice University

Rice University offers a doctoral degree in psychological sciences. The program is best suited for students interested in teaching or working in applied research. Students are awarded a master's degree on their way to earning the doctorate, and they can choose from four research interest groups, such as cognitive and affective neuroscience. In 2019, the university will add a master's degree in human-computer interaction and human factors, which will focus on applying psychological tenets to solve real-world issues.

Candidates should submit an online application, official transcripts, four recommendation letters, and GRE scores.

Texas Southern University

Texas Southern University awards a Master of Arts in Psychology in two specializations. The community-clinical psychology concentration is a 48-credit program that prepares graduates for work in areas like school systems and social and mental health organizations. The licensed specialist in school psychology concentration requires 60 credits and prepares students for work within school systems. Students take courses like behavior management and human growth and development.

Potential students must have at least 18 undergraduate credits in psychology with at least a 2.75 GPA. They will need to supply an application along with their GRE scores, transcripts, and three recommendation letters.

University of Houston

At the University of Houston, students can complete a PhD in Counseling Psychology program that prepares graduates to work as researchers or health service psychologists. Interested students can add a health psychology specialization, which is a 15-credit minor. Students enrolled on a full-time basis usually earn their degree in four to five years. A school psychology Ph.D. program is also available to students interested in working in this setting.

Prospective students will need at least a 2.6 undergraduate GPA, with a 3.0 GPA required for graduate courses. They will need to submit materials like an online application, transcripts, a statement of interest and resume, and three recommendation letters.

University of Houston - Clear Lake

The University of Houston - Clear Lake has several graduate psychology programs, including a Master of Science in Psychology. Students can choose to specialize in one of the following areas: applied social issues, behavioral neuroscience, and human factors. Students enrolled in the general psychology program need 36 credits for the thesis track or 39 credits for the internship track. They take courses like research design and statistics and biological basis of behavior.

Candidates will need undergraduate work in psychology and statistics. They will also need to display writing proficiency for the graduate level. Candidates should submit the following admissions materials:
