Schools in Kentucky Offering Psychology Graduate Programs

University of Kentucky

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Kentucky contains a doctoral program in psychology. Depending on your research interests, you can choose from five different specialty areas for studying. Your options are:

  • Clinical psychology
  • Developmental psychology
  • Social psychology
  • Behavioral neuroscience and psychopharmacology
  • Cognition, learning and performance

Each of the options is designed to reflect a specific methodology used within the study of psychology. By choosing one specific path, you will be paired with individual faculty members who specialize in that given cluster. You will have the chance for interdisciplinary study, as each faculty member has experience with branches outside their specialization.

Western Kentucky University

No matter your interest in psychology, Western Kentucky University has a program that will suit your needs. The Master of Arts degree with a concentration in clinical psychology lets you begin a career in different clinical settings, which might include addiction, suicide prevention, or forensics. There is also an Education Specialist in School Psychology degree, which could get you ready for a career in child evaluation and intervention. Finally, the Doctor of Psychology in Applied Psychology degree gives you the skills necessary to become a practicing psychologist.

Union College

Located in Barbourville, Union College has four different options for graduate study in psychology. All but the Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology can be earned entirely online; the clinical M.A. is a hybrid program that requires you to attend some courses in person. On top of that curriculum, students may choose to add another 12 credits to earn an endorsement in clinical psychology. Both the master's in clinical psychology and the Master of Science in Substance Abuse prepare students to become psychological practitioners, while the other master's, in general psychology, is intended for those who want to become college professors or continue their graduate study. Finally, Union offers a combined undergraduate/graduate Chemical Dependency Counselor Certificate designed to prepare students to help those with addiction.

Kentucky State University

KSU offers an interdisciplinary master's in behavioral science through the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The program focuses on forensic psychology, with theoretical backgrounds in applied research methods, criminology, statistics and other disciplines. You will develop professional research experience in the science and practice behind psychology, and the ways that it coincides with the law and other social sciences. Classes for this graduate program are held in the evening, and you have the option of creating a part-time or full-time schedule.

Louisville University

Earning a doctorate with Louisville University means you can specialize in two different tracks. The Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology combines treating human problems with the research you will perform at the doctoral level. You'll develop the necessary skills to better your understanding of behavioral, mental, and emotional disorders. The Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology emphasizes research to understand what goes into the actions of human behavior. You can specialize in neuroscience, development, cognition, or visual and auditory science.

At the doctoral level, you will need a master's or specialist degree in psychology or a related field, with a minimum GPA that varies by school, but can be as high as 3.5. You will also need your GRE scores and typically, letters of recommendation, a personal statement and curriculum vitae.
