Graduate programs for psychology in Louisiana are typically found at the master's level of study. Doctoral programs are available at some schools, but they aren't as prominent as master's degrees.

Louisiana State University - Main Campus

Unlike the other schools on this list, LSU does not contain any terminal master's degrees in psychology. You can earn a Ph.D. in Psychology in any of the concentrations listed below:

LSU makes an important distinction between the degrees offered their psychology department and degrees in counseling psychology or social work, which are run by other university departments. Students have the option to receive a Master of Arts along the way.

University of Louisiana - Lafayette

The University of Louisiana's Lafayette campus is home to a Master of Science program in psychology. UL Lafeyette encourages you to choose coursework that suits your research interests. They also ask you to get in touch with one of their faculty members you would consider as a future mentor before applying. A clinical practicum is optional but strongly advised for those who plan to make a career out of clinical psychology.

Southeastern Louisiana University

At Southeastern Louisiana University, you can earn a Master of Arts in psychology. Currently, their faculty is performing research in several fields, from eating disorders to the effects of violence exposure on children. You can choose to concentrate your M.A. in industrial/organizational psychology. A total of 38 credits are required to earn the master's degree from Southeastern. These programs prepare students to enter doctoral programs or to directly enter the field in a professional capacity.

Louisiana State University - Shreveport

LSUS's branch campus contains two graduate programs in psychology. First, the Master of Science in Counseling gives you the knowledge you'll need to work in substance abuse centers, courts, and higher education as a professional counselor. You can also take what you learn in this program and move on to further graduate study with a Ph.D. or Psy.D. program. LSUS also issues a Specialist in School Psychology degree. This path involves full-time study for two years, including summers, followed by a third year in an internship.

Louisiana University - Monroe

The Monroe campus of Louisiana University offers a Master of Science in Psychology. Along with a general plan of study, two concentrations are available in psychometric psychology and forensic psychology. If you prefer distance education, you can take the entire forensic psychology program online. A thesis is not required to complete the program, but anyone who is considering a Ph.D. would benefit from writing one.

Admissions Requirements for Psychology Graduate Programs in Louisiana

For students entering a master's program, you'll need a bachelor's degree. If you have not earned a degree in psychology or a closely related field, there will be certain classes you must take in order to fulfill prerequisite requirements. Admission requirements vary by school, but you will likely need at least a 2.75, and you should aim for a total score of at least 290 on the GRE General Exam. If you plan to pursue a doctorate in psychology, you will be much more likely to gain admission with an undergraduate degree in psychology. Most incoming students have a GPA of 3.5, while their combined GRE scores average around 297. All students should plan to submit personal statements explaining their research goals. Most programs ask for a total of three recommendation letters from instructors most familiar with your ability to perform high-level research.
