Seattle Schools Offering Psychology Graduate Programs

Seattle University

At Seattle University, you can pursue a Master of Arts in Psychology. The program is built around the idea of combining clinical psychology and other humanities perspectives, such as philosophy, into one field of study. You'll perform qualitative research and learn how to take a therapeutic approach to your work. Toward the end of the program, you will be placed in an internship with a private practice, clinic, or similar setting. Once the program is finished, you could begin to practice as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor or move on to a higher level of graduate study. The university also offers educational doctorates in school psychology.

University of Washington

Before you enter the University of Washington for graduate study in psychology, you should consider your ultimate goal. If you are only interested in a master's degree, it offers a Master of Arts in Applied Child & Adolescent Psychology: Prevention & Treatment. The school's psychology Ph.D. program does award a Master of Science on the way to a doctorate, but a terminal master's degree is not part of the program. The doctorate is focused on mentors, and you will train under the direct supervision of at least one faculty member that shares your research interest.

Antioch University

Antioch's Seattle campus provides a Doctor of Psychology program to aspiring clinical professionals. You can expect this curriculum to take about five years if you are committed to a full-time schedule. As part of your internship or clinical experience, you might end up working in the university's Community Counseling and Psychology Clinic. Some of your core courses inside this program could include psychopharmacology, consultation and supervision, and qualitative methods and analysis.

Seattle Pacific University

Multiple degree program levels are available at Seattle Pacific University, a Christian university. If you're interested in industrial-organizational psychology, you can earn both a Master of Arts and a Ph.D. in the subject to help develop skilled leaders of organizations. You can also find a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy program, which combines different perspectives into a psychotherapy approach for family units. A similar subject is available in the form of a medical family therapy graduate certificate. Finally, SPU offers a Ph.D. program in clinical psychology that emphasizes a biopsychosocial-spiritual perspective.

The Seattle School

Known formally as The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology, this school has a three-year Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology. The program is carefully outlined, with each year dedicated to different aspects of research and practice. You will focus on interpersonal foundations, followed by the combination of knowledge and practice, and finally, the formation of the therapeutic relationship. Each period is broken into trimesters, and you will have a full course load during the summer along with the fall and spring. Course topics include electives in theology, sexual disorders, and a history of therapeutic perspectives.

Admissions Requirements for Psychology Graduate Programs in Seattle

Although you don't necessarily need a bachelor's degree in psychology to enter the field as a graduate student, previous undergraduate work in psychology is necessary. If you haven't fulfilled this obligation, you may be able to take lower-level courses as a co-requisite. You will need letters of recommendation, and these should come from professors or instructors who can speak to your ability to perform research. Your GRE scores should be submitted, and you should make sure that you have taken the test within the last five years. Your resume/CV should be updated with your most recent accomplishments and publications/conference presentations relevant to psychology. Some programs also require essays and work experience related to human services.

Several psychology programs can be found at public and private Seattle colleges and universities, including private religious schools. You can earn a doctorate as well as a master's degree or certificate in several different fields of psychology.
