Schools in Utah Offering Graduate Programs

University of Utah

The doctoral program at the University of Utah allows you to pick one of four total concentrations. You can choose from clinical psychology, cognition and neural science, developmental psychology, or social psychology. Although you will focus your efforts in your concentration of choice, the university lets you expand your reach and perform research in any area as you continue to earn your degree. While you pursue a Ph.D. in psychology, you might want to look at their cross-area programs. You could end up studying social psychology and sexuality, the psychopathological aspects of developmental psychology, or the biological bases of human behavior. The university's program also offers a specific cross-area program focused on health.

Utah State University

Although doctoral programs are prominent when studying psychology at the graduate level, Utah State awards three different types of degrees. If you're looking at school counseling, you can earn a terminal Master of Education degree. You'll be trained in school guidance programs and learn about the professional standards involved with the work necessary to become a school counselor. You can also earn a Master of Education, as well as an Education Specialist degree, in school psychology. This credential is made for those who plan to become psychologists at the K-12 level. In this program, you can learn how to address the needs of both students and their parents in public and private schools.

At the doctoral level, you can choose to combine clinical and counseling psychology with school psychology into one Ph.D. program. Having credentials in three different types of clinical psychology will allow you to work in several different fields upon graduating. There are four other options for Ph.D. choices: behavior analysis, brain and cognition, quantitative psychology, and sociobehavioral epidemiology. All of the programs mentioned above will take place at Utah State's Logan campus, although the Master of Education program can be attended at a number of branch campuses.

Brigham Young University

Studying psychology at Brigham Young University means choosing from two different Ph.D. programs. In the general psychology program, also known as the 'non-clinical' version, you will focus on research and scholarly presentations. You'll learn about psychological discipline and the research skills necessary for this area of science. Eventually, you will choose from one of three concentrations: applied social psychology, developmental psychology, or cognitive and behavioral neurosciences. If you like, you could also opt for an additional sub-specialty in health psychology.

BYU's clinical psychology program involves a specific schedule which involves traditional courses, a one-year internship, research, and a supervised clinical experience. You'll gain a Master of Science once you are done with your second year, but it isn't meant to be a terminal degree. By the time you complete your dissertation, you'll be ready to earn your license.

Westminster College

Westminster offers a three-year Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling. While not as rigorous as a doctoral program, you will still go through a clinical internship and undergo the necessary training to find your place in the world as a professional mental health counselor. Westminster takes only 14 students per cohort, so you can expect intimate classes and discussions. Faculty members are also licensed counselors, so you'll learn from their firsthand knowledge. Classes happen four days a week, ending on Thursdays.

Admissions Requirements for Psychology Graduate Programs in Utah

Before entering graduate school for psychology, you will need a bachelor's degree. If you haven't received a degree in the same field, you will benefit from taking the GRE subject exam in psychology to demonstrate your knowledge of the subject. You should have at least a 3.0 GPA on previous coursework; some schools recommend a minimum 40th percentile ranking for the GRE general exam as well. When you write your personal statement or statement of purpose, ensure that it accurately reflects your research interests and how they will align with those of the faculty. You'll also need to obtain several (usually three) letters of recommendation from your previous instructors.

Some branches of psychology are available at the master's level, but Utah schools tend to offer programs at the doctoral stage. You can explore many different focus areas and concentrations once you find the school that fits your needs.
