Washington State University

At WSU, you will find two different doctoral programs in psychology. First, the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology places equal emphasis on clinical training and research material. You'll work in University Counseling Services during your time as a graduate student, and you can perform research that results in scholarly publications as well as academic contributions. You will earn a master's degree and defend a thesis on your way to progressing toward the doctoral level. If your interests lie elsewhere, WSU also has a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology. You can choose from several specialty areas, including applied quantitative methods and cognition.

University of Washington

The University of Washington in Seattle contains a mentor-based Ph.D program. When you are accepted into the program, you will choose one faculty member whose research area intersects with your interests as a student. Washington students can choose from a number of sub-disciplines within psychology while earning a Ph.D. You might choose to specialize in developmental, clinical, or animal behavioral topics, among other options. A Master of Science title is awarded as you move toward the Ph.D., but the M.S. is not designed as a terminal degree. In your application, you will choose an area of specialization to determine the best fit for you in the program.

Seattle University

Seattle University is home to a Master of Arts in Psychology that is oriented around existential-phenomenological psychology and therapeutic methods. With this program, you will be able to earn a graduate degree in psychology in two full-time years. To complete your degree, you'll need to write a capstone integration paper that is part of the prescribed curriculum. Once you finish the M.A., you can move toward getting your license as a Mental Health Counselor.

Central Washington University

Located in Ellensburg, Central Washington University contains three areas of graduate study in psychology. For mental health counseling, students will research and work with a specific client demographic in a given environment, which might be a mental health facility or a physician's office. If you choose to study school psychology, you will prepare to work inside a public school setting. As part of the program, you will interview students to determine their issues and help with their learning experience. Finally, the experimental psychology program is tailored for people who want to move on to a doctoral program.

Northwest University

At Northwest University, found in Kirkland, you can earn a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.). You'll spend three years on coursework, psychotherapy, and an immersion experience outside of the United States. After this, you can begin to work on your dissertation. 119 hours of semester coursework are required before you will fulfill the necessary requirements for the degree. Once you finish the program, you will be qualified to become a college professor or to pursue licensure as a professional therapist.

Admissions Requirements for Psychology Graduate Programs in Washington State

Before you begin a graduate program in psychology, you will first need to have earned a bachelor's degree. All graduate psychology programs are competitive, so you'll want to make sure your undergraduate GPA is as high as possible, preferably above a 3.5. The GRE subject test is not usually required, but your general scores for the verbal, analytical, and quantitative sections should all be sent directly from ETS to the schools you wish to attend. When applying to doctoral programs, list any teaching experience on your updated CV or resume. Any personal statements and letters of recommendation should discuss your research interests and how your needs intersect with those of the faculty.

Psychology graduate programs are very specific with their research specializations, but you can usually find one in your state that fits what you want to study. Some areas offered in master's and doctoral psychology programs in Washington state include clinical, experimental and developmental psychology.
