Public Health Graduate Programs in Massachusetts

University of Massachusetts

The University of Massachusetts offers a Master of Public Health (MPH) program in which students can select one of five concentrations. These concentrations include biostatistics, community health education, environmental health science, epidemiology, and health policy and management. In general, an MPH degree will take at least three semesters of full-time study, in addition to a 10-week practice experience related to the concentration area selected by the student. The MPH program at the University of Massachusetts requires students to take five core public health courses, while the rest of the curriculum is specific to the selected concentration. Students at this university can also pursue a Ph.D. within the field of public health in areas like biostatistics, epidemiology, community health education, and nutrition.

Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences offers both a Master of Public Health and a Graduate Certificate in Public Health within their School of Arts and Sciences. The certificate program is designed to provide students with an introduction into the field of public health and allows students to choose four of six available public health courses according to their interests. The MPH program also offers students flexibility, as students can complete the degree either on a part-time or full-time basis, and it is offered both on-campus and online. The MPH program requires students to complete a sequence of core courses before moving on to a selection of concentration courses depending on their interests.

Boston University

Boston University offers a number of different graduate degree programs in public health. Students can choose from the standard Master of Public Health degree, in which they can select a certificate and context area that is aligned with their interests, such as in environmental health, epidemiology, health policy, and maternal and child health, to name a few options. This school also offers an Executive MPH program, which is designed specifically for professionals who have at least 5 years of public health experience. Finally, BU also offers both a Ph.D. program, in which students can pursue public health subfields like biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, or health services research, and a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program that is designed for public health professionals who are looking for leadership training.

Harvard University

Harvard University also offers a few graduate degree options in the field of public health. The school offers two types of traditional MPH degrees -- a 45-credit MPH and a 65-credit MPH -- which are designed to suit the needs of a more diverse group of students. The 45-credit program is meant for medical or dental student or for professionals with at least 5 years of public health experience, while the 65-credit degree program is designed for individuals with a bachelor's degree and two years of work experience in the public health field. Students who enroll in the 45-credit program also have the option of completing the program in three consecutive summer sessions, which may work especially well for current students. Harvard also offers a Doctor of Public Health degree, as well as Ph.D. degrees in biostatistics, health policy, population health sciences, and biological sciences in public health.

Northeastern University

Northeastern University is another school in Massachusetts that offers a graduate program in public health. Students who are interested in Northeastern can enroll in the school's Master of Public Health program, which offers one concentration in the field of urban health. However, in addition to the core curriculum, students can also select from specific elective areas in topics like research, policy, and health promotion in order to take courses that are most interesting to them and relevant to their career goals. Students in this program will also be required to complete a 200-hour community internship before finishing the program.

Public Health Graduate Programs in Massachusetts Admission Requirements

When applying for admission into a graduate program in public health, there are a number of prerequisites that students must fulfill, which vary by program. For example, some MPH degree programs with a concentration in biostatistics may require that applicants already possess an advanced degree or significant relevant work experience, while the epidemiology track may accept applicants who only have a bachelor's degree. These requirements also vary depending on the university, so it is wise for prospective students to check with each program they are interested in to make sure they fulfill the admission standards. When preparing an application, many schools accept applications through SOPHAS, or the Schools of Public Health Application Service, which streamlines the application process. Students can expect to need to submit their transcripts, a personal statement, resume, letters of recommendation, and GRE results when completing their applications.

To summarize, there are a variety of schools and universities in Massachusetts that offer graduate degree programs in the field of public health. Deciding among these programs will largely depend on whether the program suits the needs and career goals of the student, and whether the prospective student fulfills the prerequisites.
