Writers and Authors
Writers and authors are responsible for creating a wide variety of written content for different forms of media. Many writers and authors may have the option to do most of their writing at home, but specifically freelance writers and bloggers are most likely to be remote positions. Freelance writers are self-employed and may write things like articles, books, screenplays and more that they then sell to publishers and/or producers. Bloggers specialize in writing shorter articles or posts that are uploaded to a web log. Their work can cover a large range of topics, from fashion to health to technology. Most writers and authors have at least a bachelor's degree and great writing skills.
Medical transcriptionists may have the option to work from home as they listen to voice recordings of healthcare workers and transcribe them into written documents. They may also do some work editing and checking various medical documents and medical histories for accuracy. This usually requires the knowledge of medical terminology and the use of speech recognition technology. Even if they work from home, most medical transcriptionists will need to be in close contact with physicians and healthcare workers as they upload information into electronic health records (EHR) systems. Medical transcriptionists usually need to complete a 1-year certificate program or 2-year associate's degree program in the field.
The need for online tutors is growing as more students at various levels of education look for flexible, extra help in different subjects. Remote positions are especially prevalent in the area of English as a second language. Tutors are responsible for providing additional support, resources and feedback to students in a particular subject. They may help students with practice problems, break down topics into more relatable or understandable terms and help students review their class materials and assessments. They also encourage students and monitor their progress. Tutors typically have at least a bachelor's degree in the area they are tutoring.

They may be hired by various organizations to verify data, prepare documents for printing, compile data, sort data and check information for errors. They may be asked to edit these errors or report them to management. Data entry keyers could compile data for a range of fields, including business and healthcare. Most of these positions only require a high school diploma or equivalent.

Some video editors may be allowed to work remotely as they edit and organize video footage into a final product. Specifically, videographers who film special events, such as weddings, are typically freelance workers and own their own business that can be ran from home. Videographers edit their own material and own the copyright protection for their work. Most video editing requires the use of special video editing software to create the desired imagery. Film and video editors must hold a bachelor's degree in the field.
