Step 1: Fulfill the Education Requirements

All aspiring teachers in the state of Rhode Island must complete a bachelor's degree in a state-approved program to become a certified educator. A Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education is the common degree for this career path. Along with academic preparation, the program includes a student teaching practicum allowing future teachers to gain vital experience inside a classroom setting. Courses in this four-year program can include teaching comprehension and response in the elementary school, developmental psychology, and the education of special needs students. Supervised student teaching will take place in the final semester of the program.

Step 2: Pass All Required Tests

Rhode Island utilizes the Praxis exams for standards in educators and issuing credentials. For elementary education teachers, a total of two exams are required before earning a teaching certificate. The Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades K-6 test consists of selected-response questions, as well as constructed-response questions based on two provided case histories.

The second test, called Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects, is split into four subtests - reading and language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. These four tests can be combined into one testing appointment, or they can be scheduled separately. Be sure to choose the Multiple Subjects option if electing to combine the subtests into one exam. A scientific calculator is provided on-screen during the math and science sections.

Step 3: Fulfill the Certification Requirements

Those seeking their first credential in the state of Rhode Island will apply for the 3 Year Initial Educator Certificate. The cost for the certificate is $100, payable in check or money order to the General Treasurer, State of Rhode Island. The completed application form, fee, transcripts and test scores can all be sent to Rhode Island's Department of Education. Official transcripts should be included only if they have not previously been sent to the Department of Education. Photocopies of any transcripts cannot be accepted by the department, but copies of test scores can be included with each application. The time for application processing can vary depending on the time of year, but the average estimate is 12-16 weeks.
