Education Requirements for Rhode Island Teacher Certification
All aspiring teachers in the state of Rhode Island are required to obtain a bachelor's degree before they can begin teaching their own classrooms without supervision. A Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education prepares students to teach elementary school children in grades one through six. Courses in this program can include teaching literacy in primary grades, the psychology of learning, and language arts methods.
To prepare for a career in high school teaching, pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education degree. This will qualify you to teach ninth through twelfth grades. All majors for this area must specialize in a content area chosen from English, world languages, history/social studies, mathematics, and sciences. This will result in a double major upon graduation. Classes in this curriculum might include literacy practices for content subjects, educational measurements, and introduction to American education.
If future teachers are interested in instructing students for grades five through eight, a Certification Extension in Middle Grades can be added to either of the programs mentioned above. This certificate can also be earned, with permission from the department, by anyone who has already earned an education degree. Concentration must be selected from English, mathematics, social studies, or science. Earning this certificate involves taking courses such as teaching adolescent literature, applied calculus, and environmental geology.
While enrolled in their teacher preparation program, students must complete a student teaching experience. Prospective teachers must complete at least 12 weeks of student teaching to qualify for certification, and 60 hours of field experience are required prior to student teaching.
