Popular Scholarships for Master's in Data Science

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program

The National Science Foundation funds this program for individuals seeking assistance for their graduate education in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) related field. This program provides 3 years of paid research-based education for applicants with high achievement records. Priority may be given to women, minorities, undergraduate seniors, those with disabilities and veterans. Funding awards can be applied to accredited United States institutions only and for those planning to enroll full-time.

Women Techmakers Scholars Program (formerly Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship)

Dr Anita Borg was a champion of securing more opportunities for women in the computer and tech fields. For that reason, she is being honored in this memorial scholarship program geared for women pursuing computer science or computer engineering related degrees. Females interested in pursuing data science master's degrees with research heavily focused on computer science or related should apply. Applicants for this program should also possess at least 3.5 GPA, strong leadership skills and intent to enroll full-time at an accredited university or college. Winners of this scholarship program receive $10,000 to help fund their educational endeavors.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) Program

The National Science Foundation funds this scholarship program to help low-income individuals obtain STEM degrees. This scholarship program is not available to apply for directly but can be offered through the institution at which you choose to pursue your degree. That being said, not all colleges or universities offer this scholarship so it is best to approach your financial aid officer to find out whether it is available. Finally, while this is geared towards minorities, it is open to all those with qualifying academic and income levels.

Strong Data Science Scholarship

This scholarship program, funded by a data science firm called Strong Analytics, is offering $1,000 to those who want to pursue a degree in data science. To earn this scholarship, applicants must submit a research project. The research project must be coded, use public data and be made into a presentation. Winners will be chosen based on typical standards such as creativity, clarity, difficulty and reproducibility. Applicants must be current attendees at a university or college in the United States or Canada.

FLIT Scholarship

The Future Leaders in Technology Scholarship is open to anyone interested in furthering their career in information technology or a related field. In this case data science is considered a related degree and this scholarship would work for anyone who chooses to focus their research in the information sector. The FLIT scholarship will award the winners $2,000 to the school of their choice. While this competition is heavily weighted on merit, there is also an essay requirement which asks you to discuss your reason for pursuing this degree.

General Scholarship Requirements

While there are many different companies and organizations that offer scholarships there is a general pattern as to what they require of applicants. That being said, the most common piece of advice given is to apply early and take your time preparing the materials to the best of your ability. Scholarships are typically competitive considering only a handful of people are often selected out of hundreds or thousands who apply.

First off, you will need official copies of your college transcripts as well as letters of recommendation from colleagues, faculty or professors. Beyond that, depending on the specific scholarship, most require a proposal, research outline, essays or a combination of all three.

While a master's in data science may be an excellent way to further your career in many different fields, the high cost can discourage potential students. Nevertheless, with a wealth of scholarship opportunities successful applicants can make their dreams of higher education a reality with a range of financial assistance.
