School counseling programs are usually offered at the master's level from a variety of schools in the state of Maryland. Maryland Schools with Graduate Programs in School Counseling

Loyola University Maryland

Through its School of Education, Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore offers a Master of Arts (MA), Master of Education (MEd), Master's Plus and Certificate of Advanced Study in school counseling. The MA and MEd programs require a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship in a school setting, total 48 credit hours and can be taken full- or part-time. Both programs also require a thesis seminar and a comprehensive exam. The Master's Plus program is 6 additional courses for those who already have a degree in school counseling to become a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), while the certificate program allows counselors to further specialize or generalize in specific areas of school counseling.

University of Maryland-College Park

The University of Maryland-College Park has a full-time MEd in School Counseling program. The program can be completed in 2 years and totals 52 credit hours. Students are required to complete a 100-hour practicum and 2 internship experiences that each total 300 hours. Students take coursework that cover topics in ethics, group counseling, research and working with students with disabilities.

Bowie State University

Bowie State University in Bowie provides a 48-credit MEd in School Counseling program. The program requires a comprehensive exam and totals 700 hours of hands-on experience in schools through the internship and practicum experiences. Students take core courses that cover various topics in counseling and are split into 5 different levels within the school counseling sequence. Specific course topics include evaluation, career counseling, special education and human development.

Frostburg State University

Frostburg State University in Frostburg and the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown offer students an MEd in School Counseling program that can be taken full- or part-time. The program requires 500 hours of internship experience and totals 45 credits. Full-time students can complete the program in 2 years, while part-time students may take up to 4 years. Students take courses that discuss topics in school counseling techniques, professional issues in the field, global education and group dynamics.

Hood College

Frederick's Hood College has a Master of Science (MS) in Counseling with a specialty in school counseling. The program totals 60 credits and offers small class sizes. Students receive hands-on training through a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship, which includes 240 hours of direct service. Students take core counseling courses and courses specifically in school counseling that cover topics in counseling youth, managing school counseling programs, consulting and planning programs.

Common Entrance Requirements

Some graduate programs in school counseling in Maryland may require GRE scores, an interview process and/or volunteer or work experience with children. However, most programs require students to have a bachelor's degree and a minimum GPA of a 2.75 or 3.0. It is fairly standard for these programs to require applicants to submit official transcripts, letters of recommendation, a resume and a statement of purpose with their application. The statement of purpose may include topics such as a student's career goals, strengths/weaknesses, interest in the program and/or experience working with a variety of people.
