School Psychology Programs in New York

Pace University

Pace University, in Manhattan, offers a Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) in School Psychology. Admission requirements include the submission of three letters of recommendation, a resume, personal statement, and transcripts. The program requires three years of study to complete. Classes include Early Childhood and Infant Assessment, Advanced Developmental Psychology, and Tests and Measurements. Students complete field experiences at the on-campus McShane Center for Psychological Services, and the program culminates in a final school psychology internship at a school in the New York City area. Special training is available to allow graduates to function as bilingual school psychologists through additional coursework in bilingual and multicultural education.

Brooklyn College

At Brooklyn College, a City of New York (CUNY) University, students can earn a M.S.Ed. in School Psychology. The program aims to train students' measurement and instructional techniques. To apply for admission, students should submit transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a resume, and biographical statement. Any undergraduate major is acceptable, however evidence of coursework in psychological tests and measurements, statistics, developmental psychology, and reading disorders is expected; as well as an undergraduate GPA of 3.0. Completion of the degree requires 60 credits, including courses such as Problems and Practices in School Psychology and Developmental Psychopathology. Students may apply for a bilingual program upon presenting evidence of fluency in a second language. Courses are scheduled in the late afternoons and evenings. The final year of the program is spent in a full-time school psychology internship.

Long Island University - Brooklyn

LIU-Brooklyn offers an M.S.Ed. in School Psychology. To apply, students should submit transcripts, a resume, and two letters of recommendation. A 3.0 GPA is required for full matriculation. 30-minute small group interviews are also a part of the application process. To complete the program, students will complete 60 credit hours of coursework. Specializations in early childhood and bilingual psychology are available upon the completion of an additional 6 credit hours of study. A program is also available to combine training in school psychology with Applied Behavior Analysis.

Queens College

Queens College, a CUNY University, offers a 60-credit M.S.Ed. in School Psychology. Students are expected to have completed an undergraduate program in psychology or a similar major, and present evidence of study in nine areas, including abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, and literacy education. Candidates should produce undergraduate transcripts indicating an overall GPA of a 3.0, a personal statement, three letters of recommendation, pass an interview, and submit a writing sample. Courses will include Learning and Instructional Strategies, Behavioral Assessment and Intervention, and Exceptionality of Human Development. Bilingual and Multicultural specializations are available. An internship in the last year is required. Throughout the internship, students prepare a professional performance-based portfolio.

Fordham University

Fordham University offers a Professional Diploma (PD) in school psychology and a PhD in school psychology or bilingual school psychology at its Lincoln Center Campus. To apply, students should submit transcripts, resume, three recommendations, and a personal statement. GRE results are required for the PhD program. The PD program is designed for students with a closely-related master's degree. Completion of the PD program takes three years, and requires courses such as Instructional Consultation and Theories of Counseling. Students complete 3 short-term fieldwork opportunities as well as a year-long internship. The PhD program trains students both as school psychology practitioners and as scholars, and typically takes five years to complete. Coursework may include Psychology of Cognition and Affect, Experimental Design, and Therapeutic Interventions in Schools. Students complete three practicums focused on clinical and consultation techniques as well as an internship and externship.

Certification as a School Psychologist in New York

Most graduates of school psychology programs will seek certification as a school psychologist. In New York, candidates who completed an in-state program are recommended for certification through the certification officer at institutions upon completion of their program. To obtain permanent certification, candidates must also have two years of full-time experience as a school psychologist, complete a Dignity for All Students workshop, and obtain fingerprint clearances.
