Career Definition of a Scrum Master

A scrum master is responsible for implementing Scrum practices in software and product development. Within the scrum team they are responsible for demonstrating Scrum practices on projects. They also form a bridge between the Scrum Team and those who work outside of the Scrum Team. Scrum Masters may be involved with training staff outside the Scrum team on Scrum principles. One of their goals is to help those outside the team understand how to effectively communicate with the Scrum Team. Their ultimate objective is to meet the technological needs of the business by fostering an environment where Scrum practices are utilized effectively.

Scrum Masters can be involved with software development and business products. Some roles will require Scrum Masters to collaborate with engineers while others may work in different industries. A bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering or a comparable field can help prepare individuals for this career. Scrum Masters may also need to be certified. Many employers consider certification an asset because it helps demonstrate expert knowledge of Scrum principals.

Scrum Masters need to have strong leadership skills so that they can provide the guidance and direction needed for their team. They also need to be able to focus more on mentoring and fostering an environment of independence where their team members are capable of developing solutions without relying on a manager to resolve issues. Glassdoor.com reported Scrum Masters earned an average annual salary of $84,513 in 2017. Their work is comparable to the role of a computer and information systems manager because they perform similar duties. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that computer and information systems managers should see a job growth rate of 12% from 2016 to 2026.
