Career Information for Self-Employed Home-Based Jobs

Graphic Designers

Graphic designers are required to have a bachelor's degree in their field. Those who are self-employed can opt to work from a home-based office, so this is a career option for those who want to work from home and be their own boss. They need artistic talent and computer design skills to determine how a presentation should look. They do things such as arrange materials that will be published or create original designs that convey concepts visually.

According to the BLS, the majority of photographers are self-employed. Those who want to work from home can choose to be self-employed and set up a home-based studio. Photographers take pictures using photographic equipment. They do not necessarily need formal training, but those who want to pursue careers in fields such as scientific photography may be required to have a bachelor's degree.

Barbers, Hairdressers and Cosmetologists

Barbers, hairdressers and cosmetologists must have a license, which involves completing a postsecondary training program to prepare for this work. They do things like cut hair or they may wash wigs or style a person's hair for a special occasion. As of 2014, the BLS reported half of these professionals were self-employed. Those who want to work from home can set up a studio in their home and operate their own home-based business.

Writers and Authors

The BLS reported that as of 2014, more than half of all writers and authors were self-employed, and it's common for those who are self-employed to set up an office at home. A bachelor's degree in English or a comparable subject is recommended and may be required by some clients and employers. Writers and authors use the written language to inform people about different subjects through articles or other materials. Those who write fiction entertain people by writing stories or books about fictional characters.

Web Developers

Web developers combine computer programming and artistic talents to create websites. They determine how the site should look and set out a design plan, and they also identify how the site should function and program the site so that it works properly. An associate's degree in web design is usually required for this profession. Web developers who are self-employed may opt to work from home.

Craft and Fine Artists

Many craft and fine artists are self-employed and work from home-based studios, so this career may suit individuals with artistic talents who are looking for home-based self-employment options. Craft and fine artists use their skills to produce works of art. This career field includes professional sketch artists as well as other artists, such as sculptors. Although artistic talent is the key requirement for this profession, a bachelor's degree in fine arts is an asset.

Tutors may have varying educational requirements, depending on the ages of their students. While it's possible to work as a tutor without a degree, it's common for tutors to have a bachelor's or master's degree. They work with students to help them develop learning strategies or to understand concepts they are having difficulty with. Some tutors work online and are able to work on a freelance basis, so those interested in self-employed home-based careers may want to consider tutoring.
