Texas A&M University

The Master of Science in Sport Management program at Texas A&M University in College Station has both on-campus and distance education options. The program has a thesis (32 credits) and non-thesis (36 credits) routes available. When enrolled in this program, students can learn about sport organization management, financial management, revenue generation, coach psychology, and research theory. The program also has an internship and courses dedicated to directed study.

Texas Tech University

The graduate program offered by Texas Tech University in Lubbock leads to a Master of Science in Sport Management. Students must complete 36 credit hours of coursework and can choose between a thesis and a non-thesis option. As part of this program, students must take part in an internship program as well as complete courses dedicated to sport leadership and sport marketing. Some of the other topics that are included in this program are sport industry law, sport morality, sporting event management, financial management, and sport media.

Southern Methodist University

Southern Methodist University in Dallas offers a Master of Science in Sport Management program that is designed to combine real-life learning with theoretical lectures. The program has 17 courses that can be completed in a year if the student is enrolled full-time. There is an internship program and students will also be exposed to case studies that deal with sponsorship in sports as well as sport law. Some other topics covered in this program include strategic management, negotiation, financial management, sport ethics, accounting, and organizational design.

Sam Houston State University

This Huntsville-based school offers a Master of Science in Sport Management program that also has both thesis and a non-thesis options. The program is comprised of 36 credit hours, with six credit hours dedicated to a thesis or practicum activity. To provide some level of learning flexibility, the program is 50% face-to-face courses and 50% online. When enrolled in this program, students can learn about topics in event management, revenue generation, health promotion in sport, media relations, and consumer behavior in sport.

Texas Woman's University

Texas Woman's University in Denton offers a Master of Science in Kinesiology program with a concentration in Sport Management from this school. The program is comprised of 36 semester credit hours and is available completely online. When pursuing this program, students have the opportunity to intern at a sporting organization and can choose between doing a thesis or an exam. Some of the topics that are covered in this program include research methods, ethics in sport, leadership theory, sport legal issues, and sport marketing.

General Admission Requirements for Master's Degree Programs in Sport Management

In order to be considered for admission into a master's degree program for sport management, applicants will need an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university. This degree will need to meet the minimum GPA requirements of that specific school, such as a 2.8 or 3.0. For some programs, the undergraduate degree should be focused on sport management or a related field like kinesiology.

Along with school transcripts, applicants may be required to submit additional documents such as a current resume, letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose. Some programs may require passing scores on the GRE or GMAT tests, and non-native English speakers may need passing scores on an English Language proficiency test.
