Schools in North Carolina Offering Graduate Programs in Sports Psychology

East Carolina University

The program at East Carolina University offers a Master of Science in Kinesiology. You can choose to take a concentration in this degree with a focus in sport and exercise psychology. With this specialization, you are equipped with the knowledge to guide people and continue their motivation through physical activity and sports settings. Depending on your goals, you can choose to work a thesis into your plan of study or go without one. Your courses will include topics such as biostatistics for health professionals, physical activity psychology, and a seminar in kinesiology. Regardless of your thesis choice, there will be a comprehensive exam before you can earn the degree at the end of the program.

University of North Carolina, Greensboro

Studying at UNC Greensboro allows you to pursue a Master of Science in Kinesiology with a concentration in sport and exercise psychology. Most of the time, undergraduates will have studied kinesiology or psychology before bringing their backgrounds into this combination of a program. Three study options are available, including the traditional thesis or non-thesis tracks that total 36 credits of study.

There is also a coursework-only track that allows students to prepare for the Certified Mental Performance Consultant role, a certification accredited by the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. On this track, students will adhere to a very specific set of courses on their way to earning the MS degree. These class topics can include psychological aspects of sport injury, professional ethics, and human diversity. There will be three separate sessions of a practicum to prepare you for a clinical setting.

Appalachian State University

With Appalachian State, you can choose to study exercise science and earn a Master of Science. There is a specialization available in clinical exercise physiology. Inside this specialization, you can steer your research toward psychology and create a thesis around the subject. You'll need to go through the core courses in laboratory assessment and exercise physiology. Once you get the required courses out of the way, talk to your advisor about your desire to work psychology into your study plan. An internship and thesis are part of the requirements, so you can schedule an internship with the appropriate setting to help expose you to the psychological aspects of exercise science.

North Carolina Sports Psychology Graduate Program Admissions Requirements

Gaining admissions into a sports psychology graduate program requires you to first earn a bachelor's degree. This degree does not necessarily have to come from a sports or psychology background, but it can be preferable to have previous exposure to the field. If your GPA is not at a minimum of a 3.0, you should at least aim for a 2.5, and expect your GRE general exam score to be at or above the 25th percentile. Your GRE writing score should be at least a 3.0.

Although options are limited for graduate programs in sport psychology within North Carolina, there are still ways for you to pursue an education in the subject. Remember that graduate programs can be flexible with research areas and use this to your advantage when talking to your advisor.
