University of Colorado - Denver

With a bachelor's degree in engineering, you can earn a Master of Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado. This degree program offers a specialization in structural engineering, and you can pursue a these or non-thesis option.

One unique area of study related to structural engineering at UC - Denver is its specialization in sustainable infrastructure. This area of study addresses the worldwide need for environmentally friendly infrastructures that remain cost effective and efficient in their use of the earth's resources. Colorado State University

CSU's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is home to four different formats for its master's degree in civil engineering with an emphasis in structural engineering and structural mechanics. To start, there is a Master of Science program with two different options. You could complete the degree with a thesis and go on to the doctoral level, or you could finish without writing a thesis and enter the professional field. There is also a Master of Engineering program, which is more focused on the professional aspects of engineering. This degree does not require a thesis or capstone project of any kind. While studying structural engineering at CSU, you will learn advanced computer software along with research techniques that emphasize theory and numerical methods. Most of your research is going to cover computational solid mechanics, along with adaptive materials and nonlinear material behavior. You will primarily focus on design and structural analysis.

Colorado School of Mines

This specialized college in Golden, Colorado, offers two Master of Science degree options in civil and environmental engineering. While pursuing the structural engineering emphasis, you can choose to write a thesis, where you will combine everything you have learned inside the lab with field research and modeling before you defend your project in front of a committee. If you prefer to focus on your classes and activities as part of graduate projects, you can stick with the non-thesis option.

You'll have the opportunity to study highways, tunnels and dams as part of your curriculum. If you earn your undergraduate degree in engineering at Mines, you can get an early start on the Master of Science as part of a combined degree program.

University of Colorado - Boulder

The Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering Department at UC - Boulder provides a Master of Science in Structural Engineering and Structural Mechanics. A total of 30 course credits are required to finish this degree, although you can write a longer thesis or perform additional research to fulfill some these credits. Students in the UC - Boulder program study engineering at different levels, from numerical simulations at the micro level all the way up to community risk at the societal level.

Admissions Requirements for Structural Engineering Master's Programs in Colorado

To apply to a master's degree program in any of the above schools, you will first need to earn a bachelor's degree. If you have previously studied engineering, you will probably have an advantage over those who haven't, as anyone with no previous study of engineering principles will need to take several prerequisite courses before they can begin to learn graduate topics. Three letters of recommendation should be submitted with your application, along with a statement of purpose and an updated resume that shows your professional and academic experience. If you take the GRE, you only need to submit your scores from the general test.
