Types of Online Graduate Programs in Systems Engineering
Master of Science in Systems Engineering
Online Master of Science (MS) in Systems Engineering degree programs are available in full- and part-time formats and usually require around 30 credits. The online format for these programs may vary and some programs may include a hybrid format option where students can choose from live streams of courses on-campus and/or recorded lectures that can be accessed at any time. Most of these programs require a culminating experience, but these experiences vary by program and may include an engineering project, research project, thesis or practicum experience. Students in these programs usually take courses that discuss topics in systems engineering concepts, project management, systems analysis, systems optimization and system verification and validation.
Master of Engineering in Systems Engineering
Online Master of Engineering (ME) in Systems Engineering programs may vary from around 30 to 36 credits and can usually be completed in 2 years. These programs are typically heavier in engineering coursework and still may offer the hybrid format options where students can participate in live-streams with classes on-campus. Students in these programs are usually required to complete a final group study, project and report, examination or research paper to conclude the program. Courses in ME programs may include topics in engineering mathematics, engineering analysis, systems engineering processes, project management and models and simulation.
Doctor of Philosophy in Systems Engineering
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Systems Engineering degree programs are available completely online and in blended formats. Online programs may offer courses on the weekends for working professionals and be completed in as little as 3 years, while other programs may offer in-person attendance options and/or few on-campus commitments. These programs may range from about 54 to 72 credits and require qualifying exams and a dissertation. Coursework for these programs vary greatly based on a student's research interests, but these programs may require students to take coursework from a primary focus area and a secondary focus area along with courses in research/dissertation work and systems engineering.
Common Entrance Requirements
Online graduate programs in systems engineering commonly require applicants to have a minimum GPA of at least a 3.0 and at least a bachelor's degree, although some doctoral programs may prefer to see applicants with a master's degree. Some of these programs require the GRE, while others do not, but the majority requires international students to demonstrate English proficiency. It is fairly standard amongst these programs to ask students for their transcripts, letters of recommendation, a resume and a statement of purpose with their application. Some doctoral programs may also require students to find a faculty and advisor and/or include a statement about any work experience in systems engineering.
Online graduate programs in systems engineering can be completed in as little as 2 to 3 years at the master's or doctoral levels. Students in these programs usually take coursework in systems engineering, management and mathematics and complete the program with a final project/paper.
