There are a number of online high school programs that operate in the state of Tennessee. The five schools below all are viable options for students seeking an online high school education in Tennessee.

View High School

Students who live in Tennessee are able to enroll in View High School, a private online high school program that operates out of the state of California and is open to students from around the country. Students who attend View High School can select from a number of both core curriculum and elective courses. Some of these elective options include Spanish, art history, and nutrition. Students learn course material through View's online learning platform, which delivers content in a video format. If students find they need additional help from instructors, they are able to contact them during their regularly scheduled office hours.

Grove Virtual Academy

Grove Virtual Academy is another option for students seeking online high school programs in Tennessee. This private academy is designed to suit the needs of student athletes, performers, and high achievers, as well as students who are struggling in a traditional school setting and may excel as online learners. Grove Virtual Academy partners with the K12 International Academy, a large online curriculum provider, in order to provide their students with a robust curriculum and wide variety of course options. Students are also able to receive SAT and ACT tutoring through the school, in addition to college planning services.

Forest Trail Academy

Forest Trail Academy is another online private high school that Tennessee high school students may be interested in. This school offers students a selection of Advanced Placement courses in subjects like calculus, chemistry, and world history, as well as a wide number of elective and other core curriculum courses. Some possible elective credits include theatre, television production, astronomy, and sociology. In addition to allowing students to complete their high school diploma entirely online, Forest Trail Academy also offers credit recovery courses for students who need to retake or make-up a course they missed or failed in the past as well as a summer school program.

TN Virtual Academy

The TN Virtual Academy is an online public school available to students in Tennessee. This program is run by the state's Washington County School district and is designed to suit a wide range of students. Each student who enrolls in this program will work with an advisor to create a personalized educational plan that takes their interests and future goals into account. Students can choose from more than 100 courses, both in elective areas as well as in the core curriculum subjects.

Anderson County Online Learning Academy

Another option for students in Tennessee is the Anderson County Online Learning Academy. This school is designed for students in Anderson County who prefer to take their courses online while still having the opportunity to participate in some on-campus activities if they choose. For example, students in this program would still be able to participate in hands-on activities like band and ROTC at their local school while completing all of their coursework online. Students who need to take a course to bring up their ACT math scores can also do this through a partnership with Roane State Community College.

Regulations for Online High Schools in Tennessee

Though online schools are non-traditional in the sense that students do not have to attend courses in person, they still must abide by state rules and regulations. All students who graduate from a public school in Tennessee must have completed a predetermined number of credits in order to graduate. These include four credits of mathematics, four credits of English, three credits of science, three credits of social studies, one and a half credits of P.E. and wellness, half a credit of personal finance, two credits of foreign language, one credit of fine arts, and three additional elective credits.
