Career Information for Jobs in the Hotel Industry
Lodging managers oversee the daily activities at a hotel and ensure that their guests have everything they need to enjoy their stay. These managers are responsible for hiring and training their staff, coordinating front-desk activities and managing the establishment's finances. They also make sure that all of the rooms and common areas are clean and that their staff offers great customer service. Depending on the establishment, lodging managers may need a certificate, associate's or bachelor's degree in the field or a high school diploma with work experience.
Concierges at hotels serve guests with various personal services. They often offer advice or information concerning local attractions, restaurants and other places of interest. They may make reservations for guests, arrange transportation if needed, take messages for guests or make sure housekeeping requests are met. Concierges usually need some on-the-job training, but are only required to have a high school diploma or equivalent.
Meeting, Convention and Event Planners
Meeting, convention and event planners may work at hotels to coordinate events in the hotel's ballrooms, meeting rooms or other large spaces. These planners oversee every detail of the event for their clients, including establishing the date and time of the event and securing food services and any necessary transportation. This requires them to work with various vendors, approve bills and payments and oversee the event activities the day of the event. Meeting, convention and event planners need a bachelor's degree and experience in hospitality is helpful.
Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners
Maids and housekeeping cleaners ensure that every room and common area in a hotel are clean and up to the company's standards. They make sure that health standards are met by disinfecting areas with cleaners and sterilizers, as well as replacing towels and linens with fresh, clean ones. Maids and housekeeping cleaners also vacuum, take out the trash and monitor rooms for damages or theft. These professionals learn on the job and do not need a formal education.
Food Service Managers
Many hotels contain restaurants or other eating establishments, which are run by food service managers. These managers oversee the daily activities of these establishments to ensure customer satisfaction. This requires food service managers to make sure health and food safety standards are met, hire and train employees, manage the budget and finances, maintain inventory and address any complaints or problems from customers. Food service managers usually have some work experience in the field and may have a high school diploma or postsecondary education.
