Urban Planning Graduate Programs in New York City

If you want to study urban planning in New York City, several universities have options for graduate programs. Information on master's and doctoral programs and their course material can be found below.

Urban planning explores the development and maintenance of different types of cities. A majority of urban planning graduate programs in New York City fall under the umbrella of a master's degree, although doctorates exist as well. You'll find some variation in the program title, but typically, you'll earn a graduate degree in no less than two years.

New York City Schools Offering Urban Planning Graduate Programs

New York University

NYU's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service offers a Master of Urban Planning degree program. You can take this as a full-time student to earn a degree in two years, or extend it to three or four years with a part-time schedule. Four tracks are available within the degree, allowing you to specialize in economic development and housing, international development planning, urban analytics, or environment, infrastructure, and transportation. You'll need a total of 45 credits to earn your degree, which includes a year-long capstone project involving problem-solving or analysis for an outside organization.

Columbia University

At Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, you can pursue two different graduate programs in urban planning. The Master of Science in Urban Planning contains 27 credits in required courses, and another 33 you will choose for your concentration and electives. You can choose to focus your studies in urban analytics, community and economic development, built environment, or international planning and development. Dual degree options are also available for the master's program. Beginning with the Fall 2019 semester, you can choose between a thesis or a capstone project.

In the Ph.D. in Urban Planning degree program, you'll spend two years completing coursework, followed by exams and a dissertation. You'll spend most of your studies analyzing the theory and history of planning.

Pratt Institute

The Pratt Institute offers a Master of Science in City and Regional Planning program. The program is 60 credits long, lasting for a total of five semesters. You'll need to complete 40 required credits in areas such as research methods, economics, and theory. The remaining 20 credits focus on elective courses, which cater to your specialization choice. Six areas of focus are available at Pratt: community development and policy, physical planning, preservation planning, placemaking and transportation, sustainability and resilience, and progressive real estate practice. A thesis is also included as part of your student experience.

The New School

The New School's Parsons School of Design houses a Master of Arts in Theories of Urban Practice program. This 36-credit program looks at urbanization processes and their governance. In the two years you will spend earning a degree, you will learn about topics that include theories of urban practice, urban colloquium, and advanced research in theories. You'll also engage in solo and group activities, and complete a thesis project during your final year.

The City College of New York

A one-year Master of Urban Planning in Urban Design is available at the City College of New York. As part of your program, you'll visit a site in New York City for analysis, and you'll take four courses each semester. Most of your time will be spent in the design studio. Other topics you'll cover during each term can include environmental planning, urban theory, and globalization.

Admissions Requirements for Urban Planning Graduate Programs in New York City

Most students entering graduate programs in urban planning need to come from a background in architecture, but Master of Science programs may be more strict about this requirement than a Master of Arts program. Regardless of your previous studies, you'll need a bachelor's degree before pursuing any graduate-level work. Some programs require the submission of GRE scores. As a standard, you'll need to submit your transcripts from your previously attended schools. Depending on the program, you may be required to submit video or written essays as part of your application, submit a writing sample, or a portfolio of some of your previous work. Most programs require the submission of a resume. Letters of recommendation will be required and should come from those who have seen your ability to perform graduate-level work.
