Career Information for Weather Jobs Without a Degree

Solar Photovoltaic Installers

Solar photovoltaic (PV) installers help individuals harness the energy produced by the Sun to power their homes and businesses. They achieve this goal by learning how to install and maintain solar panels with on-the-job training (which typically requires a high school diploma). Solar photovoltaic installers need to have an understanding of various elements of the weather (specifically, how weather can impact solar panels). This makes the position an exceptional fit for those who have an interest in learning about weather.

Wind Turbine Technicians

Another excellent job for those who want to use the weather to create a source of clean energy is a wind turbine technician. These technicians work to maintain wind turbine equipment through repairs and inspections. They also collect data from wind turbine equipment to help improve research efforts. To become a wind turbine technician, one must take non-degree courses at a tech school, and complete all required on-the-job training.

Grounds Maintenance Workers

Individuals who work as grounds maintenance workers are immersed in all types of weather conditions on a daily basis. From snow, to rain, to extreme heat, grounds maintenance workers perform their job almost exclusively outdoors. Common daily duties include lawn mowing, snow removal, tree trimming, and landscaping. Most grounds maintenance worker positions do not have any minimum required education.

Insulation Workers

Although indirectly, insulation workers must have a thorough understanding of how the weather works to properly perform their job. They are required to determine what insulation is needed and complete all aspects of installing insulation within homes and businesses. The goal of each installation is to keep extreme temperatures from entering structures and to help keep heating and cooling from quickly escaping through walls. After graduating from high school, individuals can become an insulation worker through on-the-job training.

Fishing and Hunting Workers

No diploma or degree is required to become employed as a fishing and hunting worker. Fishing and hunting workers must understand weather patterns to successfully perform their duties of catching animals on land and in the water. The animals that are caught (such as fish, lobsters, crabs, and deer) are primarily used for food. One hundred percent of the work completed by fishing and hunting workers is done in various outdoor settings.
