Schools in Colorado with Master's Programs in Wildlife Biology

Colorado State University

Colorado State University in Fort Collins has a Master of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology (MFWCB) or Master of Science (MS) in Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Biology. The MFWCB program is uniquely offered on-campus or in an online format. The program requires 30 credits, can be completed in 3 years and does not require a thesis. The MS program also requires at least 30 credits and students in the MFWCB or MS program can further specialize in a particular area of the field, such as animal behavior, endangered species management, wildlife management, wildlife and recreation management on private lands, aquatic ecology, conservation biology and fish culture.

University of Colorado Boulder

At the master's level, the University of Colorado Boulder in Boulder offers a Master of Arts (MA) in Biology that allows students to specialize in ecology and evolutionary biology and further explore research areas like ecology, conservation biology and behavior to prepare for careers in wildlife biology, conservation biology, academia and more. Students wishing to later pursue doctoral study or further train as professional biologists may want to pursue the MA thesis track, while students wanting a terminal degree to be teachers or other less research-oriented careers may pursue the MA non-thesis track. All graduate students in the ecology and evolutionary biology group must take the department's Colloquia Series to hear about various topics in the field. Other course topics may include advanced ecology, animal behavior, conservation biology, mammalogy, insect biology, population biology and techniques in ecology.

Western Colorado University

Western Colorado University in Gunnison has an MS in Ecology that offers a track in ecology and conservation or fisheries and wildlife management. The program is on-campus, takes 2 years to complete and requires students to complete an original research project. Students in the program have the unique opportunity to work with researchers at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory and can take advantage of a wide range of hands-on learning and research opportunities in various settings in the area. Students in the program may take courses in topics like wildlife techniques, botany, ornithology, wildlife ecology and management, fisheries biology and management, conservation biology and mammalogy.

Common Entrance Requirements

Most master's degree programs in wildlife biology in Colorado require students to hold a bachelor's degree that is usually in biology or a related field. Some of these programs may also like to see prior coursework in areas like statistics, and/or have a minimum GPA requirement that may range from a 2.75 to a 3.0. In general, applicants to these programs are likely to be required to include their transcripts, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, personal statement and/or resume with their application. Specific degree programs, such as the online MFWCB program, may require a certain amount of professional work experience as well.

Colorado students interested in wildlife biology can pursue MFWCB, MS or MA degree programs in different areas of biology and focus their research and studies in areas of wildlife and ecology. Most of these programs offer hands-on learning and are only available on-campus, but at least 1 degree program is available in an online format.
