Louisiana colleges offer auto mechanic training at the certificate, diploma and associate's degree levels. In addition to these programs, several 2-year colleges in the state offer technical competency area (TCA) programs in various automotive disciplines. Students will be expected to participate in laboratory experiences and to complete special projects, internships, co-op education or practicum requirements. After graduating from an automotive program, individuals can earn certification through the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
Delgado Community College
Delgado Community College is located in New Orleans, and automotive programs are offered at the certificate and associate degree levels. The motor vehicle technology certificate is 22-25 credits and can be completed in one year. Students pursuing the motor vehicle technology associate degree complete 63-65 credits. In addition to automotive coursework, students have an opportunity to participate in cooperative education programs with Ford and General Motors. The college also offers a motor vehicle maintenance and light repair TCA technician program.
L.E. Fletcher Technical Community College
L.E. Fletcher Technical Community College is based in Schriever and has diploma and TCA programs. Students can pursue TCA technician programs in several automotive specializations to become electrical, engine performance, heating and air conditioning, brake and manual drive train technicians. The diploma requires that students complete 60 credits and complete 1,410 clock hours. Students learn through lectures and labs and take courses in several automotive areas.
Louisiana Delta Community College
Located in Monroe, Louisiana Delta Community College has nine TCA programs that range from 5-16 hours. TCA technician options include programs for engine repair, transmission and transaxle, manual drive train, suspension and steering, brake, heating and air conditioning, electrical and engine performance technicians.
Students in the automotive technology diploma program complete 71 credits and take courses from all the TCA technician areas. Examples of courses include engine diagnosis, transmission repair, wheel alignment, hydraulic systems, battery diagnosis and ignition systems.
Northshore Technical Community College
Northshore Technical Community College is located in Bogalusa, and students can earn a 60-credit diploma and 75-credit associate degree in automotive technology. The college has partnerships with Toyota and Honda, which offer students opportunities to work in their respective dealerships.
TCA technician programs are available in four areas of automotive technology: engine performance and diagnostics, brakes/suspension and steering, electrical systems, and transmissions/power trains. Students can also pursue 25-credit Certificate of Technical Studies programs in electrical technician and engine performance technician.
Northwest Louisiana Technical College
Northwest Louisiana Technical College is based in Minden and has an automotive technology diploma and TCA technician programs. The diploma is 60 credits and features coursework in emissions systems, refrigeration system components, starting and charging systems, steering systems and in-vehicle repair.
TCA technician programs range in credits from 5-15 and include programs for heating and air conditioning, engine performance, suspension and steering, transmission and transaxle, engine repair, manual drive train, brake and electrical technicians.
South Central Louisiana Technical College
Based in Morgan City, South Central Louisiana Technical College has automotive certificate and diploma programs, as well as several TCA programs. The 25-credit certificates include electrical technician, power train technician and engine performance technician. The automotive technology diploma is 60 credits, and students have opportunities to complete courses, internships, special projects and cooperative education experiences.
TCA technician programs are between 5-15 credits and 150-450 hours. Program areas include engine performance, heating and air conditioning, steering and suspension, electrical systems, brakes, transmissions and transaxles, manual drive trains and engine repair.
Sowela Technical Community College
Sowela Technical Community College is located in Lake Charles and offers an automotive technology diploma as well as several TCA technician programs. The diploma program is 56 credits and 1,350 hours, covering all major areas of automotive repair. TCA technician programs train students to become manual brake and steering, manual drive train, heating and air conditioning, transmission and transaxle, electrical, engine repair and engine performance techs.
