Individuals who want to receive the necessary education and training to work as auto mechanics in Massachusetts can enroll in certificate, diploma and associate degree programs. Programs are mostly available at 2-year schools. These programs are designed to prepare graduates for National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification.
Some programs in the state have relationships with specific automotive manufacturers and offer training with their vehicles and in their dealerships. Programs may be available in full or part-time schedules. In addition, students can gain practical experience through co-ops, internships and on-the-job training.
Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology
Located in Boston, prospective auto mechanics at the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology can pursue a certificate, an associate degree and a bachelor's degree in automotive technology and automotive management. The certificate can be completed in one year and consists of eight courses.
In addition to a general associate degree in automotive technology, students can also enroll in the bachelor's program for automotive management. The college also offers on-the-job training with several automotive dealerships in the area.
Massachusetts Bay Community College
Massachusetts Bay Community College is based in Wellesley Hills and features several automotive technology programs. Students can pursue a 26-credit electrical/engine performance/HVAC certificate, 24-credit drive systems certificate, 19-credit undercarriage repair certificate or a 47-credit Toyota/Lexus certificate.
The automotive technology associate degree features four specializations with different automotive manufacturers. These programs include general education requirements, automotive courses, and cooperative work experiences with BMW, Chrysler, General Motors or Toyota/Lexus.
Middlesex Community College
Based in Bedford, Middlesex Community College offers a 64-65-credit automotive technology associate degree. Students take courses in electrical systems, engine performance and repair, suspension and steering, brake systems, heat and air conditioning, emissions and air bags.
Motoring Technical Training Institute
The Motoring Technical Training Institute is located in Seekonk and has an automotive service technician diploma. The program is offered in full-time and part-time formats. The program consists of courses and on-the-job training, and students can complete the full-time program in 27 weeks.
Mount Wachusett Community College
Mount Wachusett Community College is based in Gardner, and prospective auto mechanics can pursue the automotive technology associate degree. Courses cover topics in performance and diagnosis, electrical systems, engine repair, brakes, suspension and steering and small business management. The college also offers a certification option.
Quinsigamond Community College
Located in Worcester, Quinsigamond Community College offers an automotive technology associate degree that can be completed in five semesters. Students take courses in electrical and brake systems, gasoline engines, performance analysis, climate control systems, drive train and automotive electronics. The program also includes a cooperative work experience.
