Essential Information

Automotive repair technicians and mechanics must possess the skills to communicate with customers, fill out appropriate paperwork and work as part of automotive repair teams. After gaining work experience, automotive repair technicians can apply for certification in specialties, such as engine repair, alignment, brake repair, engine performance, steering and electrical systems.

To be able to enroll in an auto repair certificate program, students should have already earned their high school diploma. After obtaining their certificate, students can take the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exam, which requires applicants to have at least two years of work experience. However, time spent in certificate programs can count toward meeting this requirement.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) job outlook predicted a 5% growth, from 2014-2024, for automotive service technicians and mechanics. In May 2015, the median annual salary for automotive service technicians and mechanics was $37,850.

Continuing Education

Throughout their careers, automotive repair technicians often receive additional training and education on newer automotive models, parts and repair equipment. Some employers prefer to send skilled technicians directly to automotive manufacturers for training and educational coursework. Automotive manufacturers and parts distributors might also send trainers directly to affiliated repair shops to teach workers on-site.

The auto repair certificate program equips students with the necessary practical skills and work experience to be able to take the ASE exam, which is a common credential needed in the auto repair industry.
